I'm looking for a bit of advice. I'm in the market for a preamp I'm looking at the PresonusMP20 dual channel preamp (cause 2 channels would be nice) and perhaps an RNC compressor (I realize its one channel) or also considering a channel strip, Mindrint envoice or ART PRO channel or something similar, my main question is with the strip I would have the eq section, the other route I would not, how big of a deal is it to have the eq, can I use the eq on my 4 track or is it smarter to have one decent channel strip or -- 2 channel preamp, separate compressor and separate equalizer to be bought at later date due to lack of funds, any advice to help my confusion would be cool.

Well, it depends a bit on whether you're gonna use the EQ and compressor when recording, or when mixing, or both.

Because I close-mic voice and acoustic guitar, thereby getting proximity effect on both, I usually cut bottom end when tracking using my channel strips. I also use a touch of compression when tracking as well. I use the Envoice, and it's a beauty for both sound and control.

I used to chain my mic > ART Tube MP > Behringer compressor, but then I wanted EQ when recording as well, and the whole cumbersome problem got solved very elegantly with the Envoice.

But if you track without EQ and compression, why pay for all those features in a channel strip?

I'm looking around for another channel strip right now, and a second Envoice is a real possibility. BTW, if you go to the mic forum and check out the thread entitled 'In praise of the fine channel strip', you'll find a *load* of excellent recommendations for good channel strips.

Thanks for the info, I'm pretty green to recording but am trying to learn more, I probably would be using some compression & eq while recording at some point so a channel strip might be the answer, would I be able to use the compression & eq on the strip when i mixdown? using a tascam 4 track?

Is this correct?.....The RNC isnt 2 channel, but it is stereo....dont know if that matters or not....it has 2 ins/2outs, but it doesnt have separate controls......

yea, its single channel - I haven't used it but theirs more info on their website "fmraudio.com"

I dont think its technically single channel....you can send a stereo signal in and get a stereo signal out but you dont have separate settings for left and right....I could be wrong.....

You Are Correct, Sir

Hi,

I use the Envoice for almost everything I record and it makes really the difference. You can use it very flexible, soundwise. Try to get one from Sam Ash, it´s difficult to buy one in the US.
There are some mp3 links in this forum, where you can check out what the Envoice can do.

good luck

The elusive Envoice, what & where is Sam Ash, do they have a website?

Hi Welschy,
it´s www.samash.com, but you better give `em a phone call because I´am not sure if they have it in stock, it´s going to be really rare in the US! I know some guys who ordered it from steinberg canada. Don´t go for that crap out there, MindPrint wants to go really in the market, so is their pricepoint!

Just check out other comments by searching on mindprint in this forum.
