changing sounds

I have Geniesoft ScoreWriter for sequencing MIDI but one thing it cannot do is change the sounds (patches?). Everything is acoustic grand piano

is there a freeware (or cheap) program* that allows one to choose other instruments and be able to hear them? Mixing sliders would also be nice.

I think you could use Midi-OX to change patch assignments for each channel.
