I am a newbie and a non-musician. However, I do have a large collection of MIDI files which I have downloaded from the internet. I enjoy listening to these files played through my PC using the MS GS Wavetalbe SW Synth.
I am looking for a user friendly sequencer which I can use to change the instrument voices so I can arrange these MIDI file songs to my liking.
I have downloaded several sequencers and have found that changing the instrument voices is cumbersome. I am just using and changing the General Midi voices found on the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth - 128 voice table. (Yes, I admit pretty basic stuff...)
(1) Does anyone have experience with sequencers that are easy to change voices for files like I am using? I am looking for a sequencer that does not merely display bank and voice numbers... but displays real instrument names.
I would also like to eventually graduate into using VSI instruments (I think that is the right term) so ... the sequencers would have to be sufficiently sophisticated to allow me to plug-in and use such voices as I learn more.
Furthermore...
I have a Terratec 24/96 6/Fire Sound card that has a MIDI-In and MIDI-Out plug. I just bought a used Yamaha sound module MU80 (Yes, an oldie... I know) which I have been able to plug into the 6/Fire MIDI-Out port on the sound card. So, I am able to play my little MIDI files using the General MIDI voices on the MU80. (The sounds are great...!)
The MU80 sound module also comes with the Yamaha XG voices. I would like to have a sequencer which I would be able to assign an instrument from one of my files to one of the XG voices. So, the seqencer would have to have the ability to make this association.
I am currently testing Tracktion since it is touted as being an easy to use sequencer. I think I am probably missing something as I read the manual and test the features. It does not appear to be any easier to use than other sequencers.
Thanks
