changing drum sounds.

So my keyboard is hooked upto cakewalk and i record real time drum sounds into a fresh track while listening to the guitar tracks. This works well, although the drum sounds sound like crap. They sound fake. If you go into "reason" you can change a specific drum sound in the ReDrum thing adjusting the tone and pitch ect to make the particular drum file sound awsome. My question is: Can you make a drum sound in reason that sounds great, (For example a kick drum), then somehow import it into cakewalk and assign it to a specific key on the keyboard??? If yes, How?? Set by step. If no, can you do something similar in cakewalk? What about just importing a midi drum sound file into a bank or patch so when you press a key on the keyboard, it sounds liek the one you want. The standard drums suck.

This seems like the easiest way to record drums without actually having drums. Translating the drum beats in my head into a drawing, like in the piano view, just doesn't work, especially when you are writing technical punk rock that is 150 + beats per min with many fills, changes, and rolls.

If you export from Reason as a wav file, import it into a synth in Sonar, you can play then play the file from your keyboard but it will change pitch according to the key you press. You can also use your synth to change its parameters such as Attack, decay etc or any other fx you may have.

can't you just open reason, insert a redrum drum machine and set up your drums the way you want, and have your keyboard control the redrum drum machine. Then open Sonar and create a new audio track, then insert an instance of reason via rewire?

hey jason, checked out the website, nice studio.
That's quite a client list as well, in fact i think i have heard of some before like scapegoat. Anyways, what did you use to create the drumagog samples?

Drums, mics, mic pres, and nuendo. It is pretty easy (just time consuming) to make drum samples with the Drumagog program. I have access to a lot of drums and a personal collection of these samples that I had made for different projects.

Because I don't have Reason, I use Kontakt opened in Sonar to import my drum sounds from web site drum wav files, my extensive drum library or soundfonts and can change the sound dynamics in kompakt if I need to.

Another way is to use Battery to do the same thing and then I either use a midi drum pattern, piano roll view drum pattern with my k/board or my Akai mpd16 drum pad to make my hits.

Hmmmm

Maybee I should just hurry up and buy that Drum set I have been procratinating for so long. It will take 7 years to get good, but hey, Thats seven years closer to recording good tracks.

Lol. Well, thats one way....I guess :) OTOH, that would turn you into a drummer and the world has enough nutters already  :D

There are many different ways to produce drum tracks, you can use soundfonts, samples, synths, drum machines, drum pads, drum loops, drum software, real drums etc.

Going back to your original question, using a synth like kontakt/kompakt/Battery, you can assign each drum sound (does Reason save as a wav?) to a particular key on your k/b in kontakt/kompakt/Battery and then you can play the Reason "improved" drum sound on your k/b.

Looks like you need to invest in some more software ;)
