my CWPA 9 opens all of my projects with no trouble except for one specific project, whenever I open it cakewalk crashes, I tried opening it with sonar but the playback becomes slow like I'm using a pitch shifter, any suggestions?

I'd hazard a guess that one of your plug-ins is causing it.

Since you can open the project in Sonar, try removing the plug-ins one at a time to see if you can find the one causing the trouble. Of course, if you find it and you resave the project, you still won't be able to open it with PA9 (since AFAIK Sonar is not backward compatible).

Sounds like a catch 22 to me.

Maybe it's something else, but I can't think of anything else that would cause this behavoir.

To follow dachay2tnr's thought, there is a trouble shooting technicque called 'hop-scotch' -if you happen to have a lot of possible variables, in the case plugins, you start in the middle of the chain. Remove half of them the first time. If it fixes it, it's in that first group. Repeat as needed.
You can do 'save-as'es(?!) on your project a bunch of times and still have the previous versions. The work/project files are small.

This is a disaster, now its happening to all of my projects, I removed the plugins, so I either get lots of pops and noise or dont hear when the tracks are playing!

this is exactly what I did:

I have songs recorded with CW9 which I saved as bundle files so I can put them on a cd and send them to my friend, now whenever I open the *.bun or *.wrk files I dont hear any sound, I can see the marker moving showing its reading the tracks but no sound!

I'm using an audiophile 2496 sound card.

thanks for your help

Yikes.
How about if you tried starting and saving a new project as a test?

havent tried that but I guess it would work, I'm more worried about my current projects!

damn, tried creating a new project and it simply does not record audio, I can see the marker moving but when I stop I cant hear or see anything "green" record, this thing is getting worse.

Take a deep breath. If the project opens, and you can see the waveforms, but are getting pops (or nothing at all), it is most likely some setting that has gone astray. (I'm assuming you don't have bootleg software.)

Try reinstalling your audio drivers. Then reprofile the sound card in Sonar. If that doesn't help, you can try reinstalling Sonar/PA9.

If the above works, but you still get pops and clicks, there are a few things to look into, such as the graphic acceleration setting, disabling USB, turning off ACPI, reinstalling or updating your video drivers.

Let us know what happens, and what OS you are running, and what sound card drivers you are using.

I sat down away from the computer and thought about it for a while, the problem started as soon as I started saving those files as bundles, so then I checked how much HD space I had left, I had only 100 megs of free space, so I deleted some junk and viola, problem solved, I was getting all sorts of problems, audio playing back quickly, playing back slowly, pitch shifting, pops and distortion..etc it was actually fun listening to my songs playing at 300 ppm.

If I want to send those bundles to my friend, should I ask him to install the same plugins I used on those projects?

thanks alot for your help.

Yes. (Regarding the plug-in question and your friend)

I have also seen the same behaviour when my AUD.INI file got corrupted.

Killing it also fixed the problem.

so should I just delete the file?

Nooo...
Just uninstall, delete the aud.ini,
and reinstall Cake/SONAR...

Delete your project will be the last thing you wanna do... Back up 1rst while you can.

Ok, this is driving me crazy, I want to reinstall cakewalk and sonar, but before I uninstall them, I have saved the projects as bundles, I'm having problems with the bundles playing slow, does that mean there is something wrong with the file or the software?

Should I follow this order? ...

1. save the projects as bundle files
2. burn unto a CD
3. uninstall caekwalk and sonar, the directories will not be deleted, what should I do with them?

4. install the software again
5. open the bundle files and save them as *.wrk

please tell me if I need to do anything else to make sure I dont lose the projects.

I don't think it sounds like the bundle files are corrupt. Back them all, *.CWB and *.BUN to CD to ensure you don't lose them.

Try firstly just renaming AUD.INI to AUD.INI.OLD - this will make Sonar re-create the file the next time you run it.

If that doesn't work, reinstall over the top of Sonar, (leaving all directories in place).

If that doesn't work, back everything up, delete and remove any reference to Cakewalk, Sonar, Twelve Tone System, CWPA, CWP, CWB, BUN and WRK that you can find in the filesystem and in the registry.

Truly - this sounds like a config issue, not a corrupted .BUN file problem.

Also - can't remember if anyone mentioned this or not. In Sonar if you hold down the SHIFT key at the same time as you try and open your files, it will ask for confirmation of each and every plug-in. If you say NOT TO ALL, the file should probably open and you will be able to save it out as a different name. (Make sure you save as a different name or you will lose any plug-ins and settings that you may have used.
