Folks:

I'm a little confused about cdr and why they don't play in some dvd/cd players. I want to be able to master and burn small quantities of cds that will play in any cd or cd/dvd player. Is that what "red book" means? The ads for the alesis masterlink says that it will burn cds that are red book standard. Will these play in any cd or cd/dvd player. Anybody using Red Roaster ; would that be a better way to go?

Thanks.

There are a number of reasons why cdrs do not play in some players, with a bad cdr usually being the last reason. Many times it is not completeing (finalizing or closing or whatever)on a computer cd burner. Sometimes it's the wrong type of cd, (DA, music only). I've used stand alone audio only burners and never had a cd that wouldn't play wherever I tried it. I've also burnt with a computer burner...no problems with that.

Basically, I have no answer for your question, I'm just blowing smoke.

The masterlink is cool, though...

Yes, I have Red Roaster, and it works fine. However, it isn't on the market anymore. Now you have to get the lowest level of Amplitude from Magix (who bought the software from SEK'D). I hear it isn't cheap.

If you get an old version of Roaster, beware of some strange things: It has to recognize your sound card in order to work, and it has to recognize your CD-R drive in order to burn. If you have a new drive (put out since the last version of Roaster), Magix may not be able to help you get support. These problems may not occur in Samplitude, since it's been updated more recently.

As for you initial question, I've never had any experience with a Roaster-burned CD not playing, as long as I burned it slow enough (usually not at the drive's max speed). But then, I have a very old system....

Doesn't matter what software you use....

Older CD and DVD players will physically read computer-burned discs, simple as that.

Nothing you can do will "make" them work; unless it says CD-R or DVD-R compatible, you need to replace the player.
