CD works here but not there?

Out of my intense curiosity for knowledge, I relate this tale.

A friend of mine gave me a CD that he made from a vinyl he had done with a GREAT female singer and a fantastic group.

I played the CD in my car system when I got it and it just roared clear and clean.

I took this same CD into my studio and put it in my Sony CD player, which I always assumed was a good box, and I got a loud hiss when the first track came on, as well as any other track I tried.

Is my Sony CD player too old for some CD's?

Hey Green Hornet,

A common problem, becoming less common all the time though. It's possible your Sony just doesn't like that media, or it's too old to read CD-R's properly. Does the Sony Read any CD-R's? If it does, make a copy of it on your stand-alone burner using the media your sony likes and see if it plays.

If your CD's 1st track is noise, then it is a mixed media computer disc, NOT simply an audio disc.

In mixed media discs, track 1 contains the computer-related data - the remaining tracks are audio tracks.

Most CD players will mute the 1st track automatically when playing back mixed-media discs (if it can play them back at all) -- some players don't mute the data track....

Thanks much for the information. I kind of figured that my Sony CD player is a "bit" old, like more than 13 years. Also, this CD I mentioned was computer generated and Bear's comment also fits. The disc plays fine in my car CD player but it is a 2001 vehicle.
