cd-r playing on dvd players

CD Audio and CDR audio are the same, but CD and CDR MEDIA are different. The materials are different, with a different level of reflectivity. Because of this most early and a few recent DVD units (and many early computer CD-ROM drives for that matter) will not read CDRs. One recent example I know of is a JVC 3 disc DVD/CD player, the XV-M555. Does'nt read music CDRs even if they are exact copies of comercial CDs. However my computer DVD drive at work plays music CDRs just fine. So you just have to check the specific model.
 
Hi there - I am currently using Adaptec Jam to produce Red Book Cds. The resulting CDs play on everything except my DVD player, which plays commercially available CDs okay. Can anyone explain, either what I am doing wrong, or what the difference is between a Red Book CDR and a commercially available audio CD??

First question I'd want the answer to:
Does the DVD unit play CDRs produced by writers other than your own?
 
Thanks for replying. I will check this weekend, but your question seems to suggest that it might be more a case that my DVD does not like CDR rather than my burner does not like writing the right code.
This still suggests that CDR audio and standard audio are not the same, and given the feel of your homepage i guess you might be the man to answer this question! Though logic would dictate that they aren't, from an education point of view i'm just interested as to what changes in the replication process compared to duplication process.
Sorry if this sounds a bit dim, but i've looked through things like 'modern recording techniques' and they are just not up to date enough to cover this issue. if you can point to any good tech books, i'd also be really grateful.

The problem is probably with the DVD player. DVD players have a different laser to read the dual-layer discs. In many DVD players, this laser is not compatible with CDRs. I found this out w/ my player. I have it hooked up to a high-end stereo system and I was hoping to listen to mixes on it when I burn my CDs. But the darn thing won't play :-(
My solution - I take my 5 year old discman and plug the line out into an extra input on my Stereo amp...

My DVD player's manual states that it is not recommended to play CDRs on the unit because the DVD player will ruin (as in erase) the data on the CDR. Now, this may just be my unit, but I recommend that you all check your DVD manual before listening to your precious work on them.

A side note, I noticed a number of portable CD players sporting stickers saying that they can now read the rewriteable discs. Pretty slick. Older home units can't even do this. I say just spend $60 bucks on one of these and hook it up to your hi-fi.
