Starting with a POS ultra basic cassette player whose only output choice appears to be an earphone jack, is there any hope of recording to computer, via ANY input option? Or is this just a total waste of time to consider?

I would say the headphone jack would be an option. Pick up a cable or an adaptor if needed and see if you can establish a usable signal level into your soundcard. It's worth a shot. ;)

If your soundcard has a 1/8" stereo line in, you can get a 1/8" stereo cable (available at radio shack or any stereo store) and go directly from the line in to the computer. Download a freeware recording program like Audacity or Kristal for editing. Make sure your levels aren't too loud (don't want to clip the A/D converters on your soundcard). The quality probably won't be great, but it will work.

Thanks to both. I'm gonna try earphones out to line in and see what happens. With luck, my computer won't explode.

Nah, at worst you'll just get some distorted audio. I bet it would probably work fine. Just start with the volume all the way down and go from there.

I've done just that in the past -
walkman tape player + stereo 1/8" cable ->line of sound card =
not great sound BUT you take what you can get.I used this rig when I urgently needed to make a CD of an old tape but my cassette deck was in for repairs.
I used reasonable recording software (waverepair) so that I could deal with tape hiss etc etc so it worked out well enough within the circumstances.
Given my druthers it would have been otherwise in terms of equipment. I still listen to the CD too.
