Alright, thanks...maybe you can answer this one. Does a compressor raise quieter levels? I know that it makes the higher levels quieter, so it's more even, but I need something to make lower levels louder and more even, while taking louder levels and making them more even.
 
Well, yes, and no. The compressor just makes the top levels quiter. but since the do that, you'll use a higher gain, so in effect, you will raise the higher levels, yes.

Confusing? Technical? Well, that seems to be very common when it comes to compressors. Search on compressors here on the BBS, I know that people have posted links to online articles with sound examples, even.
 
Ahh yes, "perceived loudness" I believe is the term they throw around.
 
BTW, does the same footswitch (for punch-in) work with 488 mkII as with 414 mk II? It's just a plain "on-off" switch with a regular 1/4" connector - just like guitar.

I have a Yamaha Mt2X cassette recorder.I am getting action on the faders when nothings plugged in on the bounce channels also when I plug someting in and activate it I get a loud squealing sound.I have talked with another MT2X user and he said this is common. Does anyone know how to fix it? Also does anyone know where or if i can download a service manual for this unit? thanks
