cascade mics

Sorry, I've neither seen nor heard them. Their website claims they are not your average repackaged Chinese mics, though they are made in Shanghai, the home of Feilo, one of the major manufacturers of Chinese mics. Their small condenser also closely resembles a Joe Meek product (in casing, anyway - I haven't compared specs, etc.). Based on that, I suspect they are made by Feilo, but may have different parts/designs, etc. Just a guess.

I read the "pro" reviews on their site, and they weren't all that flattering, for whatever that's worth (http://www.cascademicrophones.com/reviews.html).

They're are from Heavenly Sound Accoustical Equipments Co. which is another Shanghai company. Supposedly Cascade and SE are the only mics made there - capsules and all. As far as I know Bayview is the only US Cascade dealer. Bayview has been selling them for quite a while. I got an M20 from them over three years ago (...which has been modified with the "Scott Dorsey" circuit and is for sale in the classifieds here, BTW - shameless plug! :p).

Oh, I didn’t misspell “Acoustical” – it’s spelled that way on their web site.

Good info. Thanks. I saw that on their website too, but was skeptical if they were really made in a separate plant or not. Not that it really matters, as long as the mics are decent.

I have a Cascade mic that I got for free from Bayview. I have only used it once or twice just for fun to see how it sounded. It really didn't sound too bad, but I haven't really made it to mixdown with anything recorded on it yet. I have enough LD condensors that are much nicer so I don't really need to use it, so I don't. For me it will make a nice mic on drums somewhere though where I would be afraid to place a nicer mic (for possible damage reasons). I see no reason why I couldn't make decent recordings with it.

They're free, with almost any damn purchase from Bayview, and I have to admit, IMO the one I recieved sucked ass.

I purchased an AT 4040, and recieved one free with it, the bottom of the list, large dia. condenser, and compared to the AT 4040, it sounded very muddy, almost a cardboard sound to it...waste of time, and money, even though it was free, I gave it away.

I have to agree - mine didn't sound that great until I dropped in the Dorsey board. Amazing what a good circuit and decent parts will do!
