I know Carvin has a reputation of well built guitars and amps at reasonable prices, but I didn’t know they carried microphones.

Does anyone have any experience with these microphones? Especially the CM90E - Unidirectional Condenser Mic, D42 - professional dynamic Snare-Tom mic and the CTM100 - Tube Condenser Mic.

Does Carvin's reputation extend to mics?

...more OEM Chinese product (private-labelled for Carvin)...

Carvins been making the CM90E for about 12 years or so. I can tell you first hand that it's awful! It was the first condenser I ever bought. Upon comparing with other mics later, I found that it was a brittle as a broom. Its horrible! I don't know why they even have it in their line-up. Then again, Carvin is NOT known for their mics.

The CTM100 mic is the exact same mic as the Apex 460, the Nady TCM1150 and until recently, the Telefunken R-F-T M16. The M16 had just a tube upgrade, a paint job and QC measures. In my opinion, these aren't too bad. I upgraded the tubes in mine to a 6072A and they're better than stock. I did some country vocals with a friend and the tracks are very presentable.

On another note, Telefunken USA apparently has a 'trade-up' program going on the R-F-T M16 to the R-F-T M16 MkII. They have a new circuit design and a custom transformer in it now. I'll put that in another post.

I was talking to a Carvin Rep ('cuz I ain't one) and was very surprised to find out that their mics are built by NADY.

I will not buy mics from Carvin, and I'd expect you'd find better value elsewhere.

Wait, what!?! apl suggesting that you buy anything other than Carvin? I don't believe it. Who are you and what have you done with our apl???

Really, man, their mics aren't anything great. I've got a couple of 58 knock-offs and a wireless. They are acceptable, but I wish I'd've just gotten the Shures.
