Can't record at all

I have been recording rough songs for about a year and a half using Adobe Audition and an M-Audio MobilePre USB sound card.

just recently, I started having problems: the sound card would emit a pulsing thump -bum bum bum... on shutdown that would decrease in frequency slowly until it stopped. AFTER the computer was shutdown.

Then it would occasionally, emit another longer term pulse that would continue after shutdown interminably. the only way to stop it was to cut power to the entire computer.... again this was after it was shutdown. I reinstalled the thing and that has stopped.

But now when I open the program, and arm the tracks, NOTHING records in.
I can't even get a wave in on the basic windows sound recorder.
The mobile pre plays my guitar through the computer speakers, and my mic picks up my voice, but the sound levels register nothing and there is absolutely NO recording happening whatsover.

I have contacted m-audio tech support, but they take 2 days just to get back and ask me what service pack i'm running. XP, no SP's by the way...
I don't know if somehow the box is broken as far as recording in or not, but I thought I would ask if there is something basic I might be needing to check? something I might be missing?

thanks for any help,

dave

SP is not a operating system. SP = serves pack. some programs only work correctly on SP2 and not 1

I've never heard of what you're describing. If you hear the noises after your computer shuts down then that pretty much dismisses any kind of software-related problem. I would guess it's a hardware problem.

yeah, i said XP [the operating system] No SP's [no service packs]

I can understand that some programs wouldn't work without SP2, but the fact of the matter is that it HAD been recording for a year and a half without any service packs. so i'm assuming it wasn't necessary to have them.

When I went in to check the setup, [double click on speaker/properties/recording] there is only a wave in box to check.
There has to be something wrong here... but I installed the latest drivers from M-audio.... but its not recognizing any recording input capability whatsoever for the mics.... just a wave in.

Do other devices work through the same USB port?

If so, it sounds like your interface, or its cable, has died.
