Can't hear mic in headphones

All,

I am pretty new to this but I have a yamaha mg124cx that I am record vocals with. I can hear the backing track in my headphones and the vocals get recorded ok, but i can't hear the vocals in the headphones while I am recording them live. I don't know why or what to do. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I have the mic plugged into an Xlr port and preamp

The backing track just comes in as a stereo signal. The record out goes to my computer running audacity.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I am using audacity. My pci card is an maudio 2496 audiophile
