cant get my keyboard controller to play sounds

I have a fatar controller with the midi out port going to the in on a game port on a sound card using the game port to midi cable/adaptor.

What is a a way to test it. I have not had a problem in the past. I used this on a sb awe64 gold but now I'm using the built it ac97 sound card on the motherboard. I wonder if I just answered my own question-- could it be cause there might not be any midi sounds built into the crappy sound card on the mb?
 
im not familiar with the ac97 but maybe you should try connecting via USB instead of joystick port...just a thought.
