Hi everyone.

First post here, I'm requesting your help on some compatibility issues.
I want to record myself (guitar and voice), and to do so I obviously have a guitar, a microphone, but also an external sound card, more precisely an Alesis iO2.

The problem is that I can't get it to work with the Reaper software with Asio4all drivers (it doesn't seem to have any specific Asio driver for that sound card). The iO2 seems to work properly with direct-sound configuration, but as you can guess the latency gets horrible when it's about singing.

So that's what I'm getting on the reaper's configuration interface, and honestly I can't get it to work properly, after several hours of tweaking here and there.

If anyone here has some insights on this issue, I would be very grateful !
Please excuse my english if it is any bad.

Thanks :)

At the risk of stating the bloody obvious! You don't have any input or output devices selected in Reaper.

What happens if you click on the arrow to the right of each menu box? I have not used ASIO4ALL for some time and I have JUST got this laptop back to about right so I am loathe to download anything I don't need to. I also no longer have my i02 but somebody here does! Can you help?

If Reaper is playing silly buggers (unlikely) try a demo of some other software. Magix Samplitude Pro X Silver is free and good if 8 tracks will do ya.

Dave.

Click the down arrows is what my first inclination would be also.

Edit: having said that, I've tried to get a "not connected" message, and I am unable to.

I either get a blank slot or the device inputs. But that's firewire. I don't what a USB device would say.

There IS a driver for it, you know.... " If you use ASIO compatible audio software on your Windows PC, this optional ASIO driver can be used to offer additional configuration options such as latency and buffer adjustments."

Think it is still ASIO4ALL Mark?.....

ASIO4All - Optional ASIO Driver for Windows [v2.10]
This Alesis audio interface is a plug-and-play device, which means that no additional drivers need to be installed to use it with your computer. If you use ASIO compatible audio software on your Windows PC, this optional ASIO driver can be used to offer additional configuration options such as latency and buffer adjustments.

Nope, still can't edit.

It is said that Windows 10 has upgraded the way it handles audio? There is it seems a new Win 10 driver that promises lower latency.

No idea of course if the i02 will run in 10.

Can you verify the screen shot of the window when you click the "ASIO Configuration" button is the one on the right? I also no longer use ASIO4All but have extensive experience with it. This probably isn't a reaper issue, since as you say it *works*, just poorly (high latency). When you adjust the buffer size, does the delay / latency improve? You need to find the sweet spot where you have lowest latency but no clipping/noises/dropouts caused by having the settings too aggressive.

Also, what bit/sample rate settings are you using? 24bit/44.1khz should suffice. Determine what your external sound card's 'best' settings are (from the owner's manual). Some operate at 16bit/44.1khz, 16bit/48khz, etc. Your project should be set to whatever they state. You could check the boxes for "request sample rate 44.1khz" and in the ASIO driver "always resample", etc. The idea is to allow the computer to do less work. We were actually just discussing this in an unrelated thread:

Well thanks for the answers !
I tried again this morning (and plugged the iO2 in another USB port, since the one I used was 3.0 and I though maybe it had something to do with the issue), and now the software can find my iO2. Maybe I did something wrong yesterday while tweaking the options.

The preference screen is now that way :
reaper 2.webp

When I quit the preference screen, green arrows are appearing next to the Out an In entries in the Asio4all device list, and it says that io|2 device and it's IN and OUT PIN are active. Under the inputs selection bars in the reaper preference screen, there's just USB audio device 1 and 2, nothing else.

But still, I can't record any sound from the mic (neither from the guitar). When I create a track and arm the recording, red bars are appearing and nothing goes in (you can see it on the screenshot, in the first track, below.

And I have the Asio driver installed, I don't know if that changes anything.

When trying to record, are you hearing the voice or guitar through headphones?

What does the record waveform look like? Is it showing the recorded audio or is it a flatline?

In your screen shot above, it looks as if you have channel one selected for recording. Is that the channel that the mike or guitar is plugged into?

Not hearing anthing while recording. Just a little background buzz (like a very high pitched blow) that is louder if I turn the phones button of my io2 card, so I guess it's just related with the jack port.

The waveform il like that, flatline :

I don't know if you can see what an io2 is like, just putting the image here in case : 81QB1FMcD0L._SL1500_.webp

My guitar is plugged to the guitar/line input (left side one), and my mic is plugged on the other side, into the Mic input. Left side trigger is on Guitar, right side trigger is on Mic/line. Input is on Digital, phantom power is on, and it's on stereo mode. I don't know if it's the right setup, but I've tried others but none of them works. Another thing, when I'm using the mic, the bar at the center of the io2 is showing something. So I guess it's not a soundcard problem.

"Input is on Digital," Aha! That switch needs to be in the Analogue position.

The i02 is bloody good value but it can't do digital and Anne Log at the same time.

Dave.

HOW CAN IT BE?! I tried with analog position and I didn't work ... hahaha. Well, now everything seems fine. Thank you so much.
Any tips on a good video/numeric ressource (maybe even here ?) to learn the basics of home recording ?

Thanks again :)
