Can't adjust recording volume

Hello, I'm on Winxp Home and trying to eliminate all possible problems so as to get my tapes to digital format.
I can't adjust the "Recording Control" volume in my computer....I can't move the sliders.
I can adjust the "Line In" right beside it though.

Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices->Audio->Volume(of sound recording)->Options->Advanced Controls->Advanced-> 1 Mic Boost

sometimes if thats on the recording is insanely loud through the microphone port. other than that i couldnt find any other way to do it through regular computer things either.

Hi, you know I can't adjust that either because the "advanced" is not working , same as my original problem.
