ok - i am recording live drums for the first time. on all previous projects i have either programmed or done the loop, chop, and loop thing. got very good sounds but i'm after that real vibe now, ya know?

so here is what i got

u87
alesis am51 (ld condensor)
akg d112
shure 57, 58

rnp/rnc
sebatron 2 channel tube pre
art tube mp/comp
old mackie pre's

i'm going for a pretty organic kind of vibe, my stuff is pretty mellow, jazzy, acid...
i'm thinking akg on kick of course, 87 and 51 as overheads, 57 on snare/hi hat...
suggestions on mic/pre combos? compress on the way in?
i may only have a couple of shots with this particular drummer, so i want to plan as well beforehand as possible.

thanks in advance

peace

I'd use the 87 as a mono overhead, the 51 on the snare, D-112 in the kick, and maybe the 57/58 on the toms. I'd experiment with the pre's.

just curious - would you use a mono overhead because i don't have a matched pair?

also - do you think i should compress any of them on the way in?
