Can you get airy but not harsh in a cheap mic?

I'da gone at least $300 for the damn thing; it's a really nice mic.

Hehehe. :D I'll remember that next time. I was outbid in the last couple of seconds. I figured 30 seconds before the auction closed was good enough for my bid.

After that, you might say the Audio Technica 4033 can be both airy and smooth ...

.

I was going to say that along with perhaps an ADK Vienna or AT4050. Maybe a Blue Baby Bottle too.... maybe. IMO of the ones I listed, the AT4050 is probably the least one trick pony-ish. I always sort of hate sheen on vocals though as I find so often I just EQ it out to play nice with cymbals.

Bidding software will do that - it usually will hit somewhere in the last 30 seconds of an auction. Personally I think that's a shitty way to do it, but it does work...

I recently managed to out-bid someone who did just that, hit it with under 30 seconds to go, but I got in & raised my bid in the last 10 seconds. I didn't use software to do it, either. :D

...I got mine on eBay for $250...threw in a pristine GE 5-Star triple-mica 6072 and that bad boy is sweeeeet! (and aaaaiiirrryyy too!)...

well mellow compared to the C#1 ..Yes i like my T#3 also .
I think the C1 is more open sounding and maybe better for more rock kind of song.Although i have used the T3 for lead vocal and the C1 for background on the same song. They work well together.
Man i think this guy has a C#3 for 199$ on close out ,that not a bad buy ill post the link if someone want to check it out.

Mellow? No, just the opposite. It has a high end sheen and sparkle I haven't heard out of any low priced mics before.

Really well thats nice to know.Did you change the tube in yours? What preamp are you running thru.I been running my SP mics thru my AMR peavy vmp-2 tube pre.

I been running my SP mics thru my AMR peavy vmp-2 tube pre.

...you might want to run your T3 thru a "cleaner" sounding pre to really hear the T3's sonic qualities...the VMP-2, although a great pre for certain applications, is very "coloured" sounding and works best on instrument tracking rather than vocals (IMHO)...I prefer to run my Tube-Condenser mics (like the T3, Rode K2, Mojave MA200) thru more neutral sounding pres when tracking vocals...that way I get more of the particular mic's character...but then again, if you're looking for a very "coloured" sound, whatever works...

...the best tube upgrade for the T3 is a NOS GE 6072 tube...the 5 Star black plates triple-mica or the military issue JG-6072 both work well...

you know i had that sheen thing happening one time but i think i was in 96K and maybe running thru the Joe meek VC1q at the time.Don't hear it anymore

What about using the T#3 in different modes (omni, figure 8) how does that work for you guys;)
