I've been hearing how pro tools runs excellent on macs, but I want to know can pro tools run as fast, if not faster and smoother on a Pc. I'm seriously considering the amd 64 systems, because i've heared nothing but good things about them, but since i am getting into pro tools would the amd 64's be a waste? I've heared that pro tools cannot run on pc's good because they don't have dual proccesors like the macs, is this true? Please let me know can i achieve Succsess running a digi 002 r or M box on a Amd 64 system, and will it be fast and stable.

Also when I look at these adds for music computers like Music XPC or Spectral computers, they often mention how they optimized the Xp O.s and tweaked the computer just for recording music. Can you please tell me what they mean by this. Thank you all in advance

What kind of mac are you thinking about getting?

i'm not thinking about getting a mac, i want to konw can pro tools run on an amd 64 system as fast, and as stable as it could on a g5. and could the amd 64 support pro tools and not have constant crashes and down time.

Pro Tools has yet (as far as the 6.4 version is concerned) to utilize dual processors. A Pro Tools system on a Mac uses only 14% more of the processor than Windows would at the max setting.

As far as the 64 goes...digi has not qualified the processor yet, but they also have not had any problems reported. And I've heard of other people working well with them on a Pro Tools system. On the technical side...the actual speed of the Athlon 64 chip (as of early this year) had yet to surpass 2.2GHz...which is just a little under what the G5's have and less than the P4s. However, the new thing that's throwing computer user's for a loop is that paying attention to the clock speed is a fad of the past. The 64 is supposed to concentrate more on performance than speed...which makes it more reliable in the audio world (manning had a link to an article earlier...look for it somewhere). The crazy thing also about it is the front side bus speed of the 64. It's already at 1.6GHz!!

Anyway, Macs versus PC?? I'd actually go with what you're comfortable with using. I think you'll find both will offer you a stable environment and you'll be more annoyed by the little things each OS does. I use PT on PC right now and it's working okay. Sure I get some weird quirks every once and awhile, but I work past 'em...just like I do when using PT on a Mac.

Benny, thank you for that information. Do you have any links that talk about that pro tools hasn't been using dual proccesor, so i can further research it. And do you have any idea when digi will certify the 64.

i'm not sure if or when they will certify it. it may be soon here if the 64 definitely becomes THE next processor to use. i just know on their site, they say that they have yet to certify it.

as far as them not using dual processors...i just know they don't. i think it's in the manual somewhere, but in the Playback Engine settings the CPU Usage Limit maxes out at 85% for single processors and 99% for Dual processors (which is dedicated to an entire chip). However, this is still nice because the OS can do stuff on one chip while PT is dedicated to it's own. I think Digi just hasn't had the need for both chips now. Especially since LE systems are the "babies" of the company and they max out at 32 voices. And TDM systems get their own processing chips....so yeah.

tp
if you want to go crazy on amd 64 just install samplitude
which i rate highly for big spenders like yourself TP ,
or spend 50 bucks and use what i use.

thank you manning for the suggestion, but I know that i will be using pro tools. Do you think that a Amd 64 System could support pro tools like a g5 or better. Some specs would be really helpfull. Thank you

i can get over 40 waves plugs on my PC system running protools at 32 tracks plus busses with a 2.4 ghz processor and 1 gig ram.

and you might find this interesting as well pusha.
for all the geeks in us.....

manning that does look very interesting, but i can't afford it. the only reason i can get the get the pro tools gear i'm talking about is because i have a long time time family freind that runs the pro audio section at guitar center. He's going to give me very big discounts, like for example an avalon vt737sp for 1 grand new! the new reason 2.5 for 200 dollars, and much more. When i get my computer made, he said he will hook me up with a pro tools rig, I could get an m box for 300$ and and the 002 rack for like 1000$. Basicly he's gonna slash the shit out of the prices so it'll fit my buget which is 3 grand. that's why i'm trying to find a good amd 64 system to run quickly and smoothly with pro tools.

No, it's very rare that I have crashes and if I do, protools just exits--no freezes. It's a Pentium P4.

Oh, and I do not use reverb plugins or delay plugins and that makes a difference, but I do use a lot of L1's and C1's--those tend to hog up the ram too.
