Someone suggested to me to use my guitar amp as preamp since I dont have one.

You mean as a preamp to another amp? If so there is a way.

If you have a line out you could send the signal to a power amp, I assume. If you have a power amp that is better than your power section of you amp then that is a first. Really I have no idea what the question really entails...

No, I mean I usually plug in my guitar to my effects deck and that stright into the line-in or mic-in on the sound card. Very basic.

I don't have any recording equipment apart from my PC, my Sound card and cubase.

But someone told me I could plug my guitar into my guitar amp, and use the headphones out on the amp to plug into the sound card line-in. I tried it and I got no sound at all.

You have to change the input in your soundcard's mixer window... Double-click the speaker icon at the bottom right of your screen. Then go to Options -> Properties, then Adjust Volume For Recording. Then check the line input and make sure the fader is up enough so you get a good level (but not up so high that you clip in your recording program).

Hope that helps!

I checked the volume controls, tried different levels and tried selecting line-in and mic-in in turn. Even checked if the headphones jack on the amp was working with my headphones, and it does. So I'm quite lost because it doesnt look like anything obvious.

Couple of questions:

1). Is your amp headphone output stereo (TIp-Ring-Sleeve). I'm thinking it is.

2). Is the line input on your stereo card a single jack? If it is, It is likely stereo also.

3). Are you using a Tip-Ring-Sleeve cable to make the connection? The plugs should look similar to the plug on your headphones.

Ok, it's more than a couple of questions, but it's a start...
