Can I record my amp with this setup?

So I have a usb interface, and on my amp head it has a "direct line out" jack. I was wondering if I could run a cable directly from the head into the interface in order to get a direct input from my amp. Also, would I still need to have speakers plugged into my amp in order to do this?
 
yeah you can do this. it may not sound the best but this is a way of doing it
 
If your amp has a DI output, then you do not need speakers plugged in while you are recording.
 
If it's a tube amp you sure do need speakers or a load hooked up to the speaker output or you will burn up your output transformer.

Its a solid state amp. Crate GX 130-C i believe its called.

So what type of cable would I plug from the DI output? would it just be a regular instrument cable?
 
I would assume it's a mono DI output (unless this is a stereo amp), you'll want a cable that goes to the LINE IN on your interface. You haven't told us what that is ...
 
Sorry i probably should have.

Its a Saffire 6 usb. My amp is actually stereo, so it has stereo outputs. I think you can run it mono, too.
 
This is fine to do and you don't need your amp speakers because the signal is going straight from the amp out.
I would strongly suggest mixing up your speakers though. Maybe you could try both at the same time for more possibilities at the Mixing stage.

Awesome! Thank you all for the helpful advice.

In order to avoid starting a new thread, do you guys know of good VST cab simulators (free or otherwise?) I think thatd probably help to get a better sound in recording.

Ok...Well the answer is, of course, yes. You can record anything that makes a sound.

There's something missing here... Why would you not be sure you could do that?
 
Because theres alot of talk of blowing stuff up !!

At the back it has 2 line out's: 'Direct' & 'Recording Compensated'.

I just had this amp repaired after over 15yrs of non use and it sounds AWESOME AGAIN !
