Hi guys!
First thread on here, bit of a noob to mixing and stuff too, so be gentle with me
Been in a thrash metal band a while, and we've been doing Metallica covers while we work on our originals (and having a blast, so in no rush
)
A while ago we booked a double session in our studio, and attempted to do some "decent" live recordings... Basically, we miced up the guitar amps, put 3 mics on the drums (in recorderman style with one under the snare in an attempt to get a bit more bass drum). Had me on bass going DI in to a mixing desk, and out to a band mates digital recorder. Unfortunately we did the stupid thing of micing one of the PA speakers (and I was running around too much trying to fix the other stuff to realise what we'd done and fix it -- eg, just go from the PA to the mixing desk DI in)
Been trying to mix these and make them sound a little better for a while, and coming up pretty stumped.
Unfortunately we seem to have recorded with the level a little too high so there seems to be a bit of clipping in the source (mostly the guitars, I think) and the vocals are very much in the background.
I've done what I know to do, and apply a little EQ and compression. I've also added a reverb VST on top of it all to try and make it sound a little less dry. (can give more details on this if need be). I think what I've done makes it sound a bit more "tight", but I'm not sure if it makes it sound worse or better really. (have EQ'd the snare to sound a little less trebly though, which I like...)
I've uploaded a sample here: http://www.4shared.com/dir/NfFAbN9V/CDTests.html
Ignore the pops and cracks. They're in the source and they come from the pretty dodgy mixing desk we were using (bad connections... -_-)
"E3" is the current render of what I've done with the track, and the "O" track is the original without any effects applied.
I was wondering, if there anything generally I can do to make the mixes sound a little better? Currently it just sounds like an "over loud rock recording". And is there anything I can do to make the vocals a bit better?
Thanks!
