can anyone reccomend a cheap surrond sound/home theater system

Sony has some decent (not powerful, but reasonable) 5.1 receivers around that price point... Pay attention to the connections -

I would recommend taking your time putting together a 5.1 system. You won't regret it.

Look into Paradigm Titans (~$200/pair) and/or Atoms (~$150/pair). Buy a pair now, then build up from there.
