This is regarding hip hop. I don't know whether this site condones rapping or not (I haven't really "surfed" the site yet). But my question is this:

Can anyone tell me where (besides http://mp3.com and http://ughh.com ) I can find good... no, excellent beats and background music for rap?

Sincerely,

Majestak

ps- thank you in advance.

ummm.......

[scrolls down in the home page... "DJ's/Hip Hop/Rap/Beats"... hmmm... thinks to himself, "maybe I should have posted this question there? but doesn't feel stupid at all]

[okay, maybe a little]

I don't think this site, or it's members condone or condemn rap...

... as a rule, one way or another.

The site doesn't endorse any style of music, period.

The HRbbs members break out over the normal range, regarding rap. Some members love it, some members hate it. I'm somewhere in the middle, but I prefer 'old school' to any modern rap I've heard.

Amen! Reel

Reel: I'd like to amen to your post. I probably take the "old fart of the week" prize and have very much enjoyed the appearant tolleration of this BBS.

You may recall that Weston posted a sample done with a DaviSound TB-3: I thought the quality and depth of sound was awesome; and indeed I have ordered a TB-3[it is a custom unit]. Anyhow I [probably in ignorance] would have called the samples "rap"; it was quite a cultural shock. I have two grown sons that would have fliped if they caught the old man listening to rap! I'm busting my balls trying to reproduce the rhythm section of Glen Miller. Some spectrum!

I've just turned 40,

so I think I qualify as 'old fashioned', and 'old fart on the block', by most standards, too.

!*!*!*!* Ok, members, get ready for some totally opinionated, possibly brilliant, possibly worthless opinions.

-------------------

- To me, "good rap is" ______, because _____.

- You fill in the blanks.

-------------------

Reel sez:

- To me, "good rap" is Kurtis Blow, because he could REALLY enunciate, production value was high, melody was present, melody was well developed, themes were upbeat, and he just has a really bright, 'present' voice. Dynamic, I think is what I mean.

- To me, "good rap" is Shaba Ranks, because, man, that voice. OHMYGOD, Resonant! Also, the themes are upbeat, and easygoing, like island-style, I'm cool, I'm your Mr. Loverman. It's accessible and laid back, not threatening.

- To me, "good rap" is Dr Dre & Snoop Dogg, because theirs simply a super-powerhouse of raw talent there, which cannot be ignored. Start with the great vocals/voices, stylistically speaking. I think Dr Dre & Snoop Dogg really take great, meaningful rap vocals to a higher [stylistically higher] level. Their talent to just freestyle would probably blow most people's minds. Dr Dre brings high production value to Rap recording, with REALLY HARD HITTING, POWERFUL tunes and productions, that just has this RAW EDGE, not only of production value, but of ATTITUDE. OHMYGOD, It's so symbolically violent, powerful, and threatening [for the most part/the early stuff], and they do that "I'm a baddass gangsta" posturing SO WELL!! It's a friggin' NATURAL TALENT!! They've got it! I don't have it! I can't do what they do! No white guy can do what they do! Eminem can't do what Dr Dre & Snoop Dogg do, Eminem is a JOKE! Eminem's for Dr Demento, all the way! Eminems rhymes are worse than lame, and his voice sucks, and annoys the livin' hell out of me. Anyway, I got carried away,... Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, recording together, just have it all going on. They were just too talented, not to break worldwide.

- To me, "good rap" is Wrexx & Effects, Rump Shaker, because it's just a great, catchy, fun song of it's time,... also because I'm a horny bastard, and I prefer all music videos to have babes in bikinis.

- To me, "good rap" is MOVE SOMETHING, by who-knows-who, because [see previous comments], and, it's just another get-down, fun party song & video. I barely remember it, but I rememer it has a good rhyme, and vibe.

-To me, "good rap" is BABY GOT BACK, because, [see previous comments]. Also, it's a highly developed rhyme and rythm.

--------------------
---------------------

That's all I've got, for now. I may think of something else brilliant, or worthless, later, so I'll let you know.

---------------------

I know, my musical tastes are dated, and "old school", to say the least, [old fart],... or just plain BOGUS! [you decide].

Anyway, that's what I like, in rap music. Something with a clever lyric, lots of beat, a developed melody, and a dynamic vocalist. What's not to like, there?

---------------------

The obvious reply, spoof, or comeback thread is:

- To me, "lousy rap" is __________, because __________.

--------------------

[NOW, watch the people come out of the woodwork, on this one!
 ]

Reel sez:

- To me, "lousy rap" is droning, non melodic, unimaginative, mumbling, rappers and rap songs, and also idiotic, soulless, mindless, lame white-boy, wanna-be rap, i.e., Eminem, Insane Clown Posse.

Anyway, at this point, 2001, when is rap really rap? Is Kid Rock, Rap? Is Limp Weenie, uh, I mean Limp Biskit, Rap? Is any other band that's co-opting RAP, really RAP? I think the definition gets spread a little thin, sometimes.
--------------------
That's all I have to say, that's more than enough.

OF's and Rap

Reel: I'm a mathematician and my arithmetic tells me that I was an assistant professor at Cal Riverside when you were born.

And I don't know ANY rap it would take me a long time to decide what I thought was good. I presume if I stay on these posts that My education will be forth coming.

AND I'll continue 40's jazz.

I don't listen to most rap. Most of what I hear has no value.

There are a few 'gems' out there, in the rap world, and no doubt, most of the people I named are dated examples, and some may not be recording at all, any more.

One thing's for sure. I know what I like, and don't like.

I don't claim to know a lot about rap, rappers, or anything else, I just know what I like. I've heard a few good rappers, that I like, but most of them I could live without.

Rap...

What do you think of this?

Beach Rats

(NOT me, a little known project that (at this point) will sadly never reach the masses....)

It's all good

You like what you like. I hope you like it alot. I'd lean more tward the 40's jazz but I like some of the rap, Some of it really has a hooK.

I'm no mathematician but I did stay at a holliday inn last night.

Oh sure, I like some Rap, mostly 'old school' .

[dated] rap, which for me, seems like mid '80's Rap, up thru about '90 or '91-style Rap. I only know a few artists by name, and Rap, by no means, is my favorite genre of music. I do like some of the better artists or examples of Rap songs, but it's a subjective judgement to make. You don't have to go far to hear lots of contemporary rap, as Hardcore Rap seems to have taken over the airwaves, lately, as it has also been co-opted into other more straight, Rock bands, like the Limp Bizkits, and the Kid Rocks, and others too insignificant and numerous to name.

Don't get me wrong, Rap is not my favorite music, but as a [hopefully] 'open minded' musician, with [hopefully] 'open ears', I can appreciate the better examples of Rap music, and the better Rap artists as being talented at what they do.

I worked with some rappers, [hardcore gangsta], in 1989, where I took a concept of a beat and programmed a real drum machine beat, and then played bass on the track too. These guys I hooked up with did the rapping, and the writing was actually pretty good. Hey, just me, ok, but I find it really hard to bust a good rhyme. I can appreciate it when I hear that someone can rhyme and freestyle. I'm impressed by that.

Anyway, I like some types of Rap, and a few Rap artists, and I can appreciate the style, and artistic nature of Rap, but I'm a Classic Rock person, almost all the way, as evidenced by:

The Davemania Collection.

Need I say more? Oh yeah, cds still available, get yours here today. Dave's classic rock home recording, 4 cd set, is all Rock, no Rap.

I like 40's swing, big band, and also 40's style trad jazz, and jazz quartet. I like Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, & Miles Davis. I like things like that, too, despite my age [vintage '61]. However, I'm not as familiar with jazz as I am with other styles of music, [mainly classic rock].

PS, having a good hook is universally important, independent of musical style.

Queue, re: Beach Rats, the mp3,...

I didn't like it, I hated it. Maybe it was a fun song to record, but it was not a good song. Production value was good, but it seemed like a phony, blatant stylistic ripoff of "Baby Got Back", only a little more fully instrumented and produced.

F/I:

"San-ta-Bar-bra-has-rats!",...
"Oh yeah, Baby Got Back!"...

I rest my case.

This was very likely 'lame white boy wanna-be rap', of the type I hate so much. These guys deserve to remain obscure, if this is the stuff they're pushing. No one will buy that crap as rap.

No offense, Queue, nothing personal, you know.

To me good rap is about...

organic sounding beats, uncontrollable head nodding, inspiring rhymes, real musical instruments\samples, cool breaks, energy, flow, humour, good vibes...

Not so good rap is about...

Cheesy canned beats, dumb lyrics, corny female female vocal overdubs (although I love good female vocals ie The Roots and Eryka Badu - Baby you got me), pseudo-gangster posing fake rappers who take themselves FAR too seriously.
Worth Listening to IMO:

Digable Planets (Some of this is pretty serious jazz)
Bahamadia
Mos Def
Talib Kweli
Tribe Called Quest
The Roots
Blackalicious
Common Sense
De la Soul

Reel Dave,
The reason that "Beach Rats" sounds a bit like "Baby Got Back" is because the same guy wrote and sang both songs!!!

They weren't selling it as rap, but obviously there's some heavy rap influences. The band was called Subset. Band comprised of: Mix-a-Lot + The Presidents of the USA. I found their stuff enjoyable, but they probably got passed over cuz the rap labels said it was "too white boy" (as you said), and the Rock labels said "too rappy". What I liked about it was the fact that there was real music, by real musicians, in the song. No samples, no loops, just rock.

I could send you some links or other songs, if you care to listen, it is interesting stuff.

Recording quality is professionally done demo.

Oh, and no offense taken, I asked you to listen, and give me your opinion, which you did.

OHMYGOD, Queue! "Beach Rats" and "Baby Got Back"...

Both written and performed by the same person??? What a friggin' coincidence!!! No wonder they sounded the same!!

Tell me I have keen ears, for picking up on that one!!

I think, overall, that "Beach Rats" may have been a better rock song, than rap song, if they put a totally different vocal line on it. As I said before, the basic production value of "Beach Rats" was very good. I just did not like the 'rap' vocal line, at all.

Like I said before, on a previous post, that the "rap" thing, as a definition, gets spread pretty thin, sometimes.

Sure, Queue, post or email more links. I may listen, if I can find the time. Post them here, or you know my direct email address.

Thx, Dave.
