True that. With some older synths, you may not get velocity at all, let alone aftertouch. A Casio WK series workstation would be a good choice for GM + controller.
Some MIDI keyboard may or may not have full support on certain DAWs.
Chances are that you'll have to assign keyboard functions such as knobs on a DAW manually.
It's 2011, pretty much anything is possible.
