Im will be running off a PreSonus FIREBOX with Logic Pro 7(as soon as the software comes in from ebay)
will I need an exteral mixer and effects processor or does the software and bundle have all I need?

I thought it would be but i heard otherwise from a source that said what pro 7 has is crap. what do you guys think??? and, if this is true, what would you use???
Was I better off just sticking with the stock Steinberg's Cubase LE that came with the firebox for producing a decent quality demo?

and if 7 is all that Ive heard it is will I even need the exteral compressor and EQ (both PreSonus) that I have?

its a question i should have asked before I purchased pro 7 so any help would be grealy appreciated

if its a waste i'll toss it back up on ebay

oh, and just in case, here are my system specs:
-Mac ibook, 1gig ram, and OSX tiger
-Logic Pro7 and all its software extras (once it arrives)
-Steinberg's Cubase LE (what im using now)
-1 Presonus FIREBOX
-2 Presonus TUBEPre (for extra inputs when needed)
-1 Presonus COMP16
-1 Presonus EQ3B
-1 Presonus HP4
(all nicely arranged in a Maxrac)
-a couple of Shure SM57 for bass/guitar/vox (right now the drum tracks are done via samples)
-a pair M-Audio Studiophile DX4 monitors
-and my axes

what exactly did they say was crap? Obviously he is biased and has never worked with this program in detail. I run Logic 7.1 with Apogee interfaces. If your intent is to cut demo's, then any software will work. But Logic is the best for programming (loops, hits, keys etc.) and its internal compressors and EQ's are fine. The rest is just like any other software - It's all apples to oranges in comparison. There are a few tricks also with the plugs that maximize your 2 mix. Just remember.....what you put in to it is what you get out of it. So eventually find yourself a great outboard preamp and a good compressor - and you can use that chain for every recording input on that song. Presonus isnt the best - but its pretty decent. My $0.02.

You shouldnt need an external mixer or effects - the Presonus should have a general mixer to install with its drivers.

I second this...

I've been using Logic Since Logic 3 - Years ago...
Just WAIT till you get your package!

Logic Pro 7 has so many features...
Awesome Softsynths
Great Tracking
A programmer's Environment
Customizable Windows
Notation
Solid Effects

When you get it, put aside comments you've heard...
You won't be dissapointed...

Me 2, Logic Pro is not the most intuitive interface (Sonar is much more user friendly ) but it is defiantly a winner ! The plugins are fine.

Logical! :)

The source is wrong ;)

I have been a Logic user since the days of Notator SL on the good old ATARI.

I have just upgraded to Version 7 and everything is pretty sweet (apart from loading up some parameters from songs created in version 6, but that's another can of worms)

The audio plugins have always been pretty sweet and the MIDI environment Emagic developed yonks ago is unbelievably powerful.

Having said that, an external preamp is an absolute MUST and outboard compressors for tracking vocals/guitars/drums/bottom burps will never go astray :D

You'll love it.
Just geat your head around the basics for MIDI/Audio recording and you'll be up and running in no time!

thank you for all you responses

you've answered most of my questions, the only thing that Im really worried about is effects. right now Im running off an old boss ME-30, which i dont like very much but its all Ive ever used. how would you guys rate the effects plug-ins for logic when compared to the ME-30? (specifically distortion & overdrive)

Several different distortion effect plugins available, and some are really interesting. Most presets are useable straight away, but you can also tweak the hell out of them really easily to experiment with shaping the effect to your taste.

Sorry for the delay - I was off work yesterday.
From what I have experienced in earlier versions, you can put, say, a distortion plugin on the channel you're recording and it won't affect the signal (ie, the effect is applied while you're monitoring, but it still records dry)

I haven't tried it in version 7 yet, but I can't imagine this would have changed.
