I need some tips, guidance, advice, whatever. I have 4 different software programs (CoolEditPro 2.1, AcidPro 4.0, PowerTracks 9, and Band-in-a-Box 2004). I'd like to be able to move files (projects) freely between them, but each program refuses to import files whose suffix (file format?) they don't like. Is there any "workaround" to solve this, short of making 3 or 4 versions of each project that will be acceptable to whichever program I want to use?

Anybody?

Many thanks

You can save the MIDI parts of projects as Standard MIDI files. You can export the audio parts to standard audio formats (WAV). But project files from different applications typically cannot be interchanged.

Projects? No. Each has their own way of working with things. Would you expect a transmission from a Chevy Malibu to drop into a Ford Focus?? Same difference.

But .wav files and midi files can be exported and brought into each program.

'Ya gotta learn to work with what works....

Thanks Al and Tim for attempting to clear up my confusion over my dilemma. Unfortunately, I haven't reached any level of clarity as yet. Maybe it's because I have four different software programs that I'm attempting to make use of, and the rest of you are only working with one or perhaps two ... I dunno.

My confusion lies in the fact that there seems to be a number of variations of both midi and .wav type files, and it seems that my software programs are discriminating in which ones they'll accept and which ones they won't. Is this an anomaly that shouldn't exist at all? Should all of my programs accept any Midi type file (i.e. .MID, .SMF, .RMI? On the other side of the coin, should all of the programs accept any WAV type file (of which there are 4 different ones)?

Please elaborate on this topic when and if you have the time. I'll appreciate it no end.

Thanks,

OK- here's a for example.

I write stuff in CW and save the files as .wrk files. When I need to send them to someone else I use CW to convert them to .mid format.

Same with BiaB or JammerPro. They have their own formats which I use to save the chord chart, but I export the files to .mid format and play them back in CW while recording the audio output of my synthesizer with Vegas.
These recordings are saved as 24 bit .wav files until I need to write an audio CD (need to change the .wav to 16 bit/44.1KHz for that to work) or encode them to .mp3.

Use the Microsoft version of the .wav file format. That is the standard one.
And for MIDI I use .mid type 1 unless someone specifies to me that they need version 0 for their ancient software.

I usually keep everything as a .wav file... it's pretty universal.
