So, I've got pretty much all of the instrumentals done, and am waiting for my vocalist to come to lay some tracks. In the mean time, I figured I'd post this up to get some bashing done on it. I'd appreciate any tips/modifications you have. The drums and guitar are real instruments recorded by me. The strings are all midi done in Logic.

Thanks for your help.

Updated the MP3 on SoundCloud.

Hey, cool cover, nice take on the song!

As far as mixing comments go, I like the snare sound but I feel it's a bit dry. Some simple reverb adjustments will fix that up. The toms also sound a bit dead. Maybe boost around 100 Hz to 300 Hz to bring out the more resonant frequencies in the toms (you'll have to find the sweet spot for each tom).

I also feel the distorted guitar during the choruses could be cleaned up a bit. Maybe some clever mute automation (or a gate) to keep the guitar quiet during those rests would help.

One last note: I'm not too sure about the off-key solo at the end. It just doesn't seem to fit with such a happy, poppy, major-key song. And I'm not sure how well it will sit once the vocals are in place. It's up to you though.

Overall you did a great job!

well to the guitar sounds too harsh and not sitting well in the mix. I would start off my cutting the gain by half. The lead at the end sounds thin perhaps try multi tracking to thickin it up. Lastly I hard pressed to here any bass. I like the direction. I bet vocals would add another dimension.

Thanks for your response and suggestions. I will make some adjustments to the drums. I see what you mean about the guitar, and I will be throwing on a gate. I had my questions about the solo as well, I may simplify it a bit and make it more like the original.

I'll let you know when I re-upload.

I wanted to go with a more aggressive (rockish) cover of the song, as far as the guitar goes. I will bump the level down slightly to hopefully sit in the mix better. There actually isn't any recorded bass. The "Cello" part is really the only bass line in the song (along with a doubled MIDI trance bass part). Which both of those probably could be bumped a bit.

Thanks for taking some time to give me some feedback!

Updated the OP with a new MP3 with some minor tweaks (ie snare reverb, chorus guit pulled back, bass line brought up some.)
