Cakewalk to Sonar question

I'd like to know if a particular issue I have with Cakewalk is fixed in Sonar. In Cakewalk having multiple audio tracks can overload the system. This is expected and not a problem.. except that muting the track does not help the overload problem. It seems to me that if 10 tracks are muted and I only need to play 1 or 2, the system should be able to cope with it. However the performance is just as bad as if it were trying to play all 10 tracks. In general I hit a limit around 5 audio tracks. I would like to record each track separately and mix down one at a time. Is this problem fixed in Sonar?

In Sonar, you have a new option. You can "mute" a track, in which case Sonar still reads it and processes it so that you can unmute it with a push of a button without interrupting the audio playback.... OR.....

You can "archive" a track. This tells Sonar that you aren't using the track right now, and will reduce the load on the system.

You can mute/unmute a track anytime, even while audio is playing. You can only archive a track when the playback is halted.

When you archive a track, the mute button changes to an A to remind you. I tend to archive and hide all tracks I might want to use, but aren't using right now, such as doubles of tracks I am using.

You can do the same thing in Cakewalk PA9 as well.

A muted track uses the same amount of resources as an unmuted track. If you want to reduce resource usage, you have to archive the track.

Along with the archive suggestion if you really run into problems with plugins or whatnot using up resources you can also bounce down a temporary track or print effects to a cloned track and archive your originals as a backup should you choose to remix your project.

Thanks a lot for the help, folks! I didn't know about the archive feature in Cakewalk. It will be a real help to me.

No, I didn't realise that either...and with "ye olde ancient win 98" (til xmas), I need all the resource help I can get. Thanks Laptop, Daychay and AR!
