I'm looking for a kind of cheap recording software, and am interested in Cakewalk.

First, i see Cakewalk Home Studio 2004, which goes for $89.

Second, i see Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro, which goes for $99.

Third, i see Cakewalk Home Studio 2004 XL, which goes for $149

And last, i see Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro 3, which goes for $149.

I don't want to go over this amount, as i'm asking this for my b-day coming up. I can't really tell what the difference is between all these. Basically, i want a cheap but effective program. But the key is i want it do be like Cool Edit, so if you're recording a guitar track, you can record while the drums are playing. This makes it much much much easier to record becuase it's just easier than using a metronome and you get into the music a bit better. So any halp is appreciated. Thanks!

*I don't know if i explained that little part about having the drums playing while you record... Like on Cool Edit first you record the drums. Then, when I go to record my guitar, i click the red button for recording the guitar track, but it allows me to record while i'm listening to the drums. I think it's called overdubbing? Or is that where you can go in and edit your track after recording it? o well!

Also, i just want a basic entry level program, so even if the programs i mentioned are not top-notch, if they work fine i'm into it! Thanks again!

All multitrack recording programs allow you to hear what's already been recorded while you overdub another track -- they would be nearly worthless otherwise.

The difference between the XL and regular versions of Home Studio 2004 are a few add-ins -- some extra plug-ins and software synths.

But I have to ask -- if you are using Cool Edit and you like it, why are you changing, especially if the cost is an issue?

Because, ACKUS3...........

;) Q.

Guitar Tracks Pro 3 and HS2004 are effectively the same beastie with the tweaks to make GT more applicable to guitar players - eg. amp simulation and stuff.

Evaluate what have you got gear-wise, software and hardware, match up the feature list for each product. Ask for the one that has the least area of overlap.

I would go for HS2004, normal or XL, if that's the options. :)

HS2004 is based on the Sonar 2 audio engine, Guitar Tracks Pro 3 is based on the Sonar 3 engine, which sounds better right?

HS2004 will only allow 24 real-time effects at once, and Guitar tracks Pro 3 will allow 32

If you don't use midi, GTPro 3 might just be a better place to start.

Thanks guys! I'm going with Guitar Tracks Pro becuase i won't need amp simulations and what not. I'm getting Cakewalk over Cool Edit becuase i only had the 21 day demo of it, and it ran out. So i want the actual program. THanks guys!
