SOUND DIAGNOSIS

Finally getting a new puter! It is a Windows XP system. Will Cakewalk Pro 8 work with this OS? Thanks in advance! ~~~Lee

You'll probably have to try it to find out for sure.

Cakewalk says that PA9 is not supported under WinXP (which I presume goes for PA8 as well). However, there are people on this forum who are running PA9 on XP without any apparent problems.

Of course, you won't be able to use WDM drivers, since they are not supported by PA8.

I wonder if i really need to install this older cakewalk version anyway. if i purchase cool edit pro 2.0, that should give me the multiple track and effects capability anyway, right? (needed for mixing audio from kurzweil workstation and vocals only, no midi) Whatcha think?

I wouldn't even bother. PA8 has no support for WDM drivers so your new system and XP would go to waste running such an old program.

Do yourself a favor and upgrade to either HS2002 or Sonar.

Yo, SOUND DIAGNOSIS...
If you already have Cakey 8, then the best thing to do is give it a shoot. After while, -if you don't detect any trouble- ask yourself are you satisfied using it. You can then buy CoolEdit Pro2. Switch to SONAR latter if you feel afford. Believe me, SONAR 2XL is best coupled with CEP2...

Well, it's great on it's own too, you know... ;)

Yup, with all respect atributed to the Green submarine, but we must admit, Cool Edit Pro 2 shows as better audio editor. Simple yet powerfull... And it's noise reduction not comparable with anything in the universe...

As usual, you homerecording guys came through, and I am eternally greatful! Let me fill you in on whats going on with my situation. I am buying a new Dell p4 2.4gig, 512 ram, 120 gig hard drive, turtle beach santa cruz soundcard...blah blah blah...The existing Dell p2 333 mz with the cakewalk pro 8 and cool edit pro 1.0, turtle beach montego, goes to the "kid". I used CW to initially record sequences from my Kurzweil workstation. Then I added stereo vocal tracks through a LD condenser and a Joe Meek VC3Q....I used the cool edit to cut/fade/add vocal effects/eq...etc. In other words, I used both programs. Did I use them correctly....I really don't know. My recordings are quite good, folks say. Anyhoo, would I be able to achieve basic tracking/eq/mixing/mastering/effects with Cool Edit Pro 2.0 on my new puter???? What would SONAR offer? Stuff I DON'T need? Don't need MIDI....don't need sequencing. I want to keep it simple....but have the tools at hand for production when needed. All I have learned in 2 years of intensive research is that you can create GREAT sounding shit....IF......and for the most part ONLY IF....you know what the frick you are doing in the first place. I am trying to get into that catagory. :) Please assist me if you can if COOL EDIT PRO 2.0 would fill the bill for me? Thanks again so much for all the learned advice you dudes have given so far! Cheers to ya! ~~~~Lee
