Cakewalk Multitracking....

I've got a problem that seems simple to fix, but the problem is I don't know how. I've recently started using cakewalk, and cannot understand why this is happening.

I record track one; guitar for example.
When I record track two, the guitar track (one) is recorded too. And no, I do not have speakers blarring into the mic.

In the analog world I've been able to put track one, for example into queue, and not have it bleed thru. How can I do this with cakewalk? A setting? Or an issue of inferior soundcard?

It sounds like a common mistake (esp for SB users). you might be recording from all sources with a 'What You Hear' option or similar.

The fix: use your system (Windows or sound card driver) mixer, set your recording device to the source you're recording from. i.e. line in, mic in etc.
 
I'm unsure what you are getting at by saying "set your recording device." As, I have tried with no luck. If I go the route of muting everything in the mixer except the line in, I get no sound during playback/record.

You seem to have a solution, but I do not follow what you are suggesting.

Sounds like you are in the "playback" section of the mixer. The recording section does not have "mute" choices, rather it has "select" choices.

When you open the mixer go to Options -> Properties and select Recording. Then go to the lower part of the page (show the following) and make sure every device you have has a checkmark next to it. Then select OK. Afterwards, you want to put a checkmark uncerneath JUST the device you are using to record (e.g., Line In).

Note: if you look at the top of the mixer, you can tell when you are in the right section. One will say Play Control, the other will say Record Control. Obviously, you want Record Control.
 
Ahhhhh does not work for me...
I do not have a sb live if that's a problem. I've got a friend who has one, and he has no problem.

Unchecking leaves the controls out of the mixer, but that only it seems. Track one still bleeds to track 2 :/

If you's guys have any suggestions, please lemme know...

jacob - you're getting closer, but still no cigar.

When you first get to the recording section of the mixer, there will be a list of items directly under the heading "show the following volume controls." Putting check marks next to them will determine which of these items show up in the mixer and which do not.

AFTER you have done that click OK and it will take you back to the mixer (with the label at the top saying Record Control). Under each item will be another check box labeled Select. The item that has the Select checkbox marked is the item that your sound card will record from.
 
I now understand what you mean, and how I am confused...

If you look at this image of the Recording Control panel, you'll see I cannot select, I can mute.

I think what dachay2tnr's talking about is the Recording Options. Go here: Options -> Properties -> (Adjust volume for) Recording -> OK. Can we see them please?

Like this (the picture is from my work-laptop. Don't think bad about me: ;) )

jacob - very interesting. I'm attaching a picture of my mixer, which distinctly says "select". I'm not sure how you would use this with "mute" buttons. Seems like you would have to mute everything except the input you want, and that doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

What version of Windows are you running? Do you have another mixer for the SB card? If so, can you select your recording inputs in the SB Mixer?

I'm running 2k. I've found no other mixer, I even installed another driver from the SB site, which gave me a help file and that's about it.

I tried muting them all but the one I needed, but that will mute the playback -- combinations thereof have not been successful.

Any further suggestions?
 
jacob - The picture that I posted is from my laptop, which is also running Windows 2K. I'm only guessing, but it appears to me that you have a corrupted mixer.

Please don't take offense, but is your copy of 2K a legitimate copy? If so, I might suggest reinstalling Windows.

The picture of the mixer that you posted earlier looks exactly like the playback mixer looks (except for the fact that it clearly says "Recording" at the top). The fact that it actually mutes playback is also interesting. The recording mixer, at least to my knowledge, should not have any effect on playback at all.

The behavior that you describe, and the picture make it appear that your recording mixer is actually working like your playback mixer. This, of course, makes no sense, unless the mixer file is corrupted somehow.

Also, I thought the SB cards came with their own mixer (Creative Mixer if I recall). Do you still have the installation disks for your sound card. Maybe you just never installed the mixer. That might be another way around your problem.
