I would put a GE 5 Star 6072 in your M9. If you go to the site below you can buy a GE 5 Star 6072 for $20 to $25 plus 5 bucks for shipping. The 5 star will do wonderful things to your mic IMHO. Good luck. :)

A 6072 is a 12 ay7, considerably less power. If you had a 12ax7 in it, you'll want the same.

I am aware of that however I changed out the 12AX7 in my Peavey T9000 with a GE 5 Star 6072 and it made the mic much smoother on the top end. Same thing with an MXL V69 that I sold. I also changed out the 12AX7 in a Karma K55 to a 6072 which worked out well for that mic too. In all of the above mics the tubes that were replaced were chinese tubes.

Of course one of these Telefunken ECC83's would be pretty good too. :)

If my math is right, that's just slightly over a 6dB difference in output. Just crank the pre a hair higher. :D

That's nothing! A Telefunken VF14 for a U47 goes for $1200.

That's not the tube you need, though. You can find a GE 5-star 6072A on eBay for less than $50. Ei also makes a damn fine 12AY7 for about $11.00

OR!... you can get am Ei 12AX7 that is a clone of the Telefunken grey smooth plates for about $8. I have tested these side by side and they are almost exactly the same!
