CAD M177 vs. M179

Hi guys!

I need an LDC to cover both vocals and toms (no larger than 14") duties...

I´ve heard good things about the M179, and I was wondering if the M177 would work good as well...

Any comments about that? Thanks a lot!

They are the same mic except for the patterns. The 179 has variable patterns...The CAD m179 is a variable pattern condenser microphone. Variable pattern means the microphone has a rotating dial that allows you to select any variation of pickup patterns from omni to figure 8. Cardioid patterns sit in between these two extremes.

The 177 has cardiod only I think. I have the 177. Solid unit.

I thought so (same mic, less options)... I don´t need variable patterns for now...

I just want a nice LDC that can handle toms and voice...

Do you have any clips of the M177 in action? :)

Well sure...but really...it's not worth listening to them because the room I record in is pure trash and I'm only just starting to understand the whole process of recording.

If price isn't a limiting factor between the two, get the M179. You want double-duty involving percussion---the variable pattern is nice to have for that. I just checked prices and they are up substantially for the M177 and up and down for the M179. I bought my original pairs at the current price levels but obtained other pairs at substantial saving when they went on sale (sale price: $60 for the M177 and $125 for the M179). I don't regret the original prices---they're good mics.
