(rats - I said GLX3000 in the subject - it's GXL3000, of course)...

That GXL3000 multipattern mic is back up on Stupid Deal, this time for $60, which seems pretty good. I'm not jumping, again because I've got the 583's on the way, but if you've been waiting to get these cheap - today looks like the day.

They might make good cheap drum overheads... (but I have no idea)

i used mine on floor tom last weekend and it did really well.

Mega-Cheap!

I was on my way over here to post this. I picked one up when they were $69.99, and it was definately worth that. Not the greatest mic in the world, but very useable, especially given the multiple patterns.

I'm very tempted to get one just to try modding... a Peluso CEK-89 and a tranny swap would probably make this a mighty respectable mic, and you'd be in for just a bit over $200.

I saw this too. I also bought one when they were $69.99 (which they were for a long time)

I'm trying to convince myself I don't need a second one... I do really like the mic though.

(and after thinking about it some more)
Now I'm trying to convince myself I don't need 2 more for tom mic'ing!

I ordered one.

My collection will modestly boast an SM57, SM58, AKG Perception 220, MXL 990, and then the CAD GXL3000.

In two weeks, I'm moving into a house with a 1500+ sq ft unfinished basement with nothing planned but music space.

The future is so bright, I'm wearing shades.

why, why, why???

Bought the GXL3000 last night. The GAS pains were too much. Haven't read any real negative reviews so maybe I'll like it.

Why do I buy gear I don't need? Somebody help me!

I use my gxl3000 over my GT55 alot of times it sounds better for vocals it is definitely worth 60 dollars. I highly recommend it.

I'm there with you, I will now have 3 of them.

I opened mine up tonight and pulled out two layers of the headbasket screen. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but it was easy to do.

The kicker, though, was that the capsule/saddle was rotated about 30 degrees counterclockwise! I rotated it back without too much trouble, though it did keep twisting itself back a few degrees. There's some torque on something down in there.

Ah... Quality Control, Quality Control, where for art thou, Quality Control?

When you get a chance to hear the difference, would you mind reporting back?
Also, what exactly did you do to remove the filters?

Andrew,

Be happy to report back when I can.

Removing the inner screens was really easy. I just unscrewed the base of the mic, pulled off the body, and then removed the three screws holding the mic basket/grill on the frame. The grill then lifted away, and I just reached in with a small pair of needlenose pliers and grabbed the innermost layer of the mesh right along the seam, and then pulled-twisted-dragged the layer around the inner circumferense of the grill. In doing so I revealed a very fine middle layer that I didnt' even know was there.... so I pulled it out too.

Given how dense those two layers were together, I'll be mighty surprised if the mic doesn't come out sounding a lot more open/clear. It looks lots cooler already.:D

I'm tempted to do that...hmmmm....

BTW, yesterday I recorded some vocals with one of those that I have and just confirmed that this is a very nice mic. The vocals came out great. Its a steal for the price.

Drums

I will be laying down some drum tracks with a pair of these tomorrow. Could someone tell me where I should have the switches at on the mics thanks. I ordered two of them sunday night and got the last night, the fastest I have ever gotten anything from MF.

TrevRev,

How are you going to be using them? As overheads? In a Glyn Johns setup? As Room Mics? Do you plan to also use a kick mic and snare mic?

If you've got a good sounding room, using them as room mics set on Omni may be the way to go. If the room is less friendly, go overhead and use the cardiod setting. Me, I'm into minimal mic'ing.

Whatever the setup, the ultimate answer is to play around, use your ears, and go with what sounds best.

thanks, they will be used in the Glyn John method. I am actually dedicating most of the day tomorrow treating my trackin room and messing with placements.

I tried one of my GLX 3000 yesterday, about 4 feet out front of a guitar cab, supplementing a e906 close on the cab, and an Oktava ML53 also about 4 feet in front.

I much prefer it to my other multi-pattern mic, an Apex 415, which to my ears, had a brittle or harsh high end. The GLX, by contrast, seemed to have smoother high end. Can't believe it was only $60.

Yesterday, I mic'd toms with these on the cardioid pattern. They worked out great. I also used one on some scratch vocal guide tracks and I'm very pleased with what I got.
