I haven't heard the new one, but I am a big fan of the old e-100. Use the pad for everything except recording crickets :p.

...and may I add further that the old E-300 is a terrific mic. It was my first condensor and I still use it frequently. I haven't heard the new version though.

When I bought my E-300, it was around $700 new. It makes me wonder about the build quality of the new version.....

I also, liked the old E-100, and I wondered why they discontinued them...haven't heard the re-issues.

The funny thing is elsewhere the e300 sells for 400 to 500 bucks itself, so its kinda strange, maybe they have some overstock and just trying to dump them.

I tried the E-100^2 and it's at least as awesome on bass drum as the old e-100. Did a real decent job on some overdubs when the school TLM103 went out on us. I haen't tried the new e-300^2, though.

Every spring, I retest my mics recording crickets...not by choice though :( The damn thing show up everywhere!

I LOVE my E100. Great on lots of things including kick and bass cabs. I think it has a nice open sound .... fairly neutral, takes EQ well, and really pretty versitile. Sounds good on acoustic guitar and I put it on a hammond cab and got good results. Pretty darn versitile with a good bottom end.

I used to have the an E200 and that had a really neutral sound but not real "big" sounding.... a little scooped. The multi patterns were nice and it had a sound much different than my current M179 replacement (which I also LOVE!!).

Listened to an E300 in contemplation of replacing the 200 with the 300 but decided to get my set of GT MD1-B's instead.

The e300 had a similar but "larger" sound (less scooped and more presence) than the 200 in my admittedly very limited time listening to the 300.

IMHO you could get a lot done with that mic package.

Dont forget the preamps!!

I thought maybe they didn't come with shock mounts or something to be selling together for the cost of the e300 alone. I emailed Musician's Friend tech support, and they said that both mics come with shock mount and case. The only reason for cheapness I can see is that they are made of plastic.

The manufacturing and/or assembly may be done overseas now as opposed to in Conneaut, Ohio. I'm not sure what's still done by them in Conneaut.

As far as I know, CAD/Astatic/Omnitronics hasn't gone out of business at any point.

Yep, another E-100 fan here. I bought this mic new when they first came out. A great multi-purpose little side address mic with nice onboard high-pass, on/off and pad switches. I use it for alot of stuff and often kick drum. I wish I had another matching one. A real decent company too.

In case anybody cares, I decided to pick up the e100/e300 package at the 399 pricetag from Musician's friend and try it out. Anyway, I've been really pleased with the way they sound on what I've tried them on...my voice, accoustic guitar, and Euphonium. The best condensor I owned previous was an AT3035, so I don't have a whole lot to compare them to, but I've been really impressed. I like my AT3035, but for vocals, it doesn't really compare to the e300's smooth sound.

How good is the CAD C195 for recording occasional vocals and instruments? Is it a competitor for the SM58?

I must admit when I saw that deal I felt it was a real steal. The e100 is a great mic. The e300 is outstanding. I've put it next to a AKG 414B-ULS and frankly, it keeps up nicely. Great rich bottom with open mid and transparent high end as well. The current 100 and 300 are assembled on a custom basis by a Chinese manufacturer of their choice. They then get them in at the Conneaut lab and hand test and verify performance prior to packaging and shipping. I figure as long as they test and verify the units prior to shipping they will meet the standards needed. It's still a great deal for mics in that performance category. Heck, if I were looking that would be my FIRST choice........

nice to hear that somebody else has a similar experience. Other mics seem to get a lot more attention on these forums, and that had me almost deciding not to go for the package. I'm glad I tried it though. I'm really impressed.

The e100 actually sounds pretty decent on vocals, but the e300 definitely beats it. I really like the way it sounds on vocals in the omni setting.

I hadn't seen the C195 before. It's going for around 70 on zzounds. I'd be interested in hearing about it too.
