Cabling Preamp to SoundCard

OK - I'm back with phase two of newbie questions.

I purchased the Audiophile 2496 soundcard and the Audio Buddy Preamp for the SM57 microphone. The line out on the preamp is a 1/4" TRS jack. The anolog input of the soundcard is two RCA (L/R) jacks. Do I use a 1/4-RCA cable from the preamp to just one of the soundcard inputs? And would a second source on the preamp go to the other RCA input on the soundcard? My system is still under construction, so I can't play with it to find out. I just want to buy the right cables so I'm ready to go.

The 1/4 TRS outputs on the Audiobuddy are balanaced (NOT stereo), so you'll want 1/4" TS -> single RCA. This chain will be unbalanced, but you should be fine unless you're running the cable 20 feet.

So each output on the pre will go to one input on the soundcard. Hope that helps!

Im using the 2496, and Eurorack UB802. pre-amp/mixer. The inputs work fine as like Gordon says, my problem is output.I'm only getting left out. My wavs are clearly stereo and meters say so in the recording program. I'm using a 2 rca to single1/4 headphone adapter to plug my speakers into...am I doing something wrong ?
If I play a cd through my recording software, and plug my speakers into the old speaker output (not the soundcard), I get stereo...this doesn't work with the 2496. The settings for output on the 2496 say: wav out 1/2...is this not right ? Suggestions ? Thanks...Happy Holidays.

I too just got a 24/96 and I can't seem to get output. I got a RCA to 1/8" converter and I'm plugging my PC speakers into it but get no sound. How do you get sound out??

Hawk...I'm only getting left out, so I don't think that what I'm doing is correct so you may not want to do what I did, but here's what I did anyway. I got 2 -male rca to 1/8 female adapters, and plugged those into the 2496 output. Then, (and here is where I think I have a problem) used a y-cord stereo adapter: 2 male 1/8 to 1 female 1/8 ...which I plugged my pc speakers into. Interestingly, when I first bought the y adapter, I mistakenly bought mono, and with some fidgeting...was able to get sound from both speakers, though I'm not sure if it was true stereo or not. I'm going to try to hunt down "Tweaks guide" for some f.a.q. Maybe we'll get a response from someone who can tell us both the right way. By the way, I noticed from your level thread that we both have basically the same set-up, the only difference being, I am using an acoustic/electric instead of miking. Except for the "left out" problem, the 2496 and the Eurorack seem to work well together. I'm really pleased...no extra noise, and good output.I hope to pick up a Shure 57 soon to mike another acoustic for some added layer. I just used 2- phono to rca cords from the 2496 input, to main out on the Eurorack. Good luck!

I'm wondering if my problem is perhaps driver related. The reason is, if I launch WinAmp and try to play an mp3, it just sits there. The song never even plays. If I change the playback device to my Soundblaster, it plays normally. If it were a speaker or cable problem, you'd expect the song to play exept you'd just get no audio. Monkey, can you play normal MP3s like with winamp or Windows mediaplayer?

As for the Y cable, I think I have eliminated that as a problem. The reason is, I can plug my headphones right into the RCA output jack of the 24/96 (with a 1/8" to RCA adapter,) and still get no audio. So, I think the problem lies in the driver or somewhere BEFORE it even outputs from the card. One other thing I noticed that you might try. Open the Windows volume control/mixer for the 24/96. Can you slide the volume up and down? I cannot. It does not move for some reason.

Well, maybe someone will be able to help us. I'm planning on calling tech support on Monday, but I wish I could fix it before then as Im anxious to start recording.

Ok, I got everything working right on my end. I think I had a faulty y cord and just replaced it (w/mono rca to stereo 1/8)...also, I just downloaded the latest driver for my system (win98) from M-Audio-,http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.drivers, and everything is working perfectly.To do this,copy the driver for your system on floppy, then open device manager/drivers, and update from "have disk". I did have quite a bit of difficulty configuring the audiophile when I first got it, and I'll share any info I have if you need it. I was able to solve my problem by "disableing"not "removing"the old drivers and changing the interrupt numbers in the resources tab of 2496. Download the updated drivers for the 2496

Uninstall the M-Audio driver.

Reinstall the drivers.

Then update the drivers.

In terms of cabling....

All you need is a dual mono male 1/4" to dual male RCA cable.

The inputs on the 2496 are female RCA and the outputs on your pre-amp are female 1/4".

Glad you got it working Monkey. I think I got mine working as well. I had to put it in another machine, (luckily I had a spare PC I wasn't using,) but it's working now. No matter what I tried I could not get it to work in the other machine. Oh well, it's sounding great now!

DO the little behringer mixers only have preamps on the xlr inputs?....can i plug my drum mics into the 1/4 inputs via an adaptor so i can savve the onboard preamps for vocals and guitar.....do Drums and bass NEED a preamp?
