Okay this is a real newbie question that has not been adequately covered in homerecording 101.
I am by no means a tidy person, but I really make an effort when it comea to my instruments and my gear. Other people that I occassionally perform with make fun of me for being "anally retentive" about my mic cables on stage. I've even gotten spark plug cable seperators to keep them from touching each other on the way to the mixer. I use 9 mics (close mic'ing) on my drumset. I am equally compulsive about this in my home studio.
I'm the kind of guy that can let a weeks worth of dirty dishes pile up in the sink and I'm not sure that dusting more than once a month is all that neccessary (yeah, I'm divorced).
But my cymbals are always clean and polished and there's never any rust on my set. I never have cables where they can be stepped on, and I do keep my recording gear dust free, clean and covered when not in use.
Do I have to worry so much about keeping my mic cables from touching each other? Is it as important as keeping my home stereo speaker cables from intertwining? Or is my keyboard player right that I've gone over the top with this? I kind of thought that the spark plug cable seperaters was a good idea, he just laughs at it.
