which of the two sets do you prefer for recording an acoustic guitar with two SD Condensers?

two MXL603s or two C4s from Studio Projects?

Sorry if I seem to be raining on your parade, but there are two things going against your question........

1; There are really too few C4 owners who also own 603's. out there yet to get a fair answer.

2; Even putting aside how personal preferences would influence any response, you have to consider that both room acoustics and what guitar(s) are being used are going to create an almost infinite set of variables which cannot be seriously addressed in a poll like this.

I have 3 main acoustics I record here and each one has different requirements in both mic choice and positioning..............there really is no definitive preference.

I've used both the C4's and 603's on acoustic. I'd say if you have the extra dough the C4's are worth it. And if you have a decent-sounding room, the omni caps on the C4's can sound really great on acoustic.

i have quite alot natural reverb in here. do you think the C4 can make a good recording in a room like that?

visa, sure - if you have natural reverb that you'd like to capture then using omni patterns might be the ticket. The C4 in omni would pick that up.

You alos might consider a pair of Earthworks SRO's or Avenson Audio ( Stapes ) STO-2's - both of which are true omnis and run about $500 per pair.

I've used both and I kept the C-4's. In my room, on my Taylor, it's no contest.-Richie

You're making me get drool on my keyboard. I have a Taylor and a set of 603s and they're great. If the C4's are that much better, ... I'm in trouble...:D

How come all these really old threads from last year or older keep poping up on there own?

Because it's a free country, maybe?

Most likely because it's a poll and when someone votes it will pop back to the top even if no one makes a post.

I was trying to figure that out, too, DJL. I think still4given has asswered the question.-Richie

I voted for the 603s because I own one and don't own a C4. Is that what I'm s'posed to do? How many people who voted for the C4s have ever heard a 603s? I wonder why they didn't include a comment here to justify their vote.

The 603's are very good mics. We did an in house shootout a couple of weeks ago with C4's, Schoeps, Cascade, and the new Joemeek JM27 The JM27 is the same mic as the 603, ADK SC1, and the Cascade mic.

The 603, or in this case the Joemeek JM27 we used was darker sounding, yet had a full rich and warm sound to it. It added a color to the mids that was quite nice for acoustic guitar, but only acceptable at best on overheads, where the C4 were very open and detailed on everything. The C4's were very close to the Schoeps, but we were very surprised how well the JM27 did, so that means the 603's will also do very well.

Now this is us at our facility, so don't go taking our word as some of you may feel we were biased in the test, but the end result is the 603/Joemeek JM27 are pretty darn good for the money.

FWIW....

Humm, if I didn't know better I'd think this was a plug of spam... anyway, what are the differences between the MXL603S and JM27 (besides cost)? And while we are comparing your mics with others... what is the differences between the SP C4 and Behringer B5 (besides cost)? Thanks

Well if it is spam, Alan is spamming for MXL, ADK, Cascade and PMI. I'm sure the other companies will appreciate it. :-)

Hey Alan... what's the differences between the MXL603S and JM27... also what is the differences between the C4 and Behringer B5? Thanks
