C1 gets glowing review in Mix Mag

I'm not saying that the C1 doesn't merit a good review, but when's the last time you saw a bad review in any magazine, pro or semi-pro oriented???

I've seen the Marshall MXL2001 given a great review (not by Mix) and that is one of the nastiest mics I've ever heard!

Prorec.com's review of the C1 and the Marshall MXL2001...I think youll find they are straight shooters......

I particularly enjoy the part on the 2001 review that says "When we first received the mic for review, I was so surprised by the sound quality that I assumed it was broken ":D

with that siad , the best place to go for mic reviews in the Homerecording.com Microphone Forum....

Bruce, trust me (he he), this is one fine sounding mike.
Out of my (ever growing) mike collection it does the best in putting up with the data compression inherent with my Tascam
564 minidisc 4 track. Of course, someone with a different set-up
can adjust the bass response through changing the mike distance as appropriate, as I get as close as possible.

P.S. Thanks Bruce for setting me straight about the -10db
switch not "protecting" a condenser's capsule-I think
that I read it can prevent distortion instead.
(Note: The C1 doesn't have a -10db attenuation switch)

Just to be clear, I was not trying to imply that the C1 wasn't any good -- my only point was that many mags don't seem to give bad reviews to ANY piece of new gear... making me question their review integrity... unless you trust the reviewer's opinion thru past experience, it is wise not to take gear reviews as gospel...

Gidge,

I believe that the same guy who reviewed the C1 on prorec reviewed it in Mix. I may be wrong. What good are two reviews if they come from the same guy

The moral of Bruce's story is that you cant trust reviews....he didnt say that the C1 wasnt a good mic....

The problem is that Bruce just rambles on and on and its hard to find the point in his posts, if there even is a point.....:D

Goddamn it... I HATE that!!! When people ramble
on and On and ON with absolutely no regard for
other peoples time... I mean... after all...
people have things to do, people to see, and
places to go... not to mention stuff to record
and things to learn in their studios... then
people go and type LONG freakin' posts that
seemingly go nowhere and don't actually provide
any useful info with no obvious intent but to
kill time and waste others' precious minutes.
Then they make the whole thing worse by putting
in smilies and other such nonsense :) ;) :D :(
to make their meaningless posts seem as if they
contain more useful content than they actually
do, tricking more and more people into wasting
time reading them, when they could be doing
something that much more productive...... Boy,
some people simply have no consideration
whatsoever, and I don't know why anybody puts up
with it.... I certainly wouldn't.... NOW... what
was this thread about again?????

Well, the thread was about the new Mix Magazine review on the C1. The review was not done by the same person at Pro Rec. That was Rip Rowen at Pro Rec, and it was Pete Leoni who did the Mix review. There are five more glowing reviews coming...so if they will annoy anyone, then don't read them.

I understand everyone's apprehension regarding the Studio Projects mics, as so much has been said about them. Its like...enough is enough already, but at the same time, I am glad everyone thinks that highly of them to keep talking about them.

They have had so much success, and an overwhelming endorsement by 99.9% of the users that by now, they should be considered the best mic in its price class...period. The good news is the VT-1 is almost ready, and the new B Series is coming in January, so I expect the hype to keep on for another year.

With that said...thanks to all of you for your support and your ideas.

ok, it spread to Alan...what exactly is your point Alan.....noone here is bashing your product...if youd like, do a search of my name and see the many, many times Ive recommended the C1....are you on coke?....kinda paranoid?......

bruce just made the observation that you cant trust magazine reviews, and I agree.....

To paraphrase a recent Woody Allen film; "There's a word for people for
people who think everyone is after them", Woody replies "Yeah,
perceptive". And Bruce, quit C1 bashing! (just kidding) Actually, I
understood the context of your comments (scary isn't it?).
As polygraphs are unreliable, how about sodium penethol for reviewers?

P.S. Has anyone seen Rip Rowen and Pete Leoni in the same room at
the same time? (makes me wonder.....)

Though I agree with Bruce that most reviews tend to be sugar coated (gotta keep those sponsers happy) you get to the point where you can start to read between the lines in reviews. This reviewer obviously thought the C1 was a steal for the price.

Here's a quick review reading lesson:

Review phrase: "if your in the market for so and so it wouldn't hurt to give such and such product a listen"

Translation: "this product sucks balls if I could be honest and tell you how trashy it sounded I'd be out of a day job"

Alan, my apologies. I read that somewhere and did not cross check.

I dont base my mic purchases on reviews, although they influence the mics that get on my to check list. What I do is try to listen to the mics first hand(which I cant do often) or listen to what a particular mic does to somebody else's track. My opinions about the C1 are based on tracks I've heard from other people.

Whoa Gidge...Chill out man. Did I say you or anyone else were bashing anything? What do you want me to say...Yeah, the reviews are all wrong man...I paid him $500.00 to write it so it would look like the mics are good. The reviews are the reviews, so readers either like them or not, or believe them or not.

My point is I don't care what the review says, or what the people who read them think. What I care about is what the people who use them say. If everyone out there does not know by now that these mics are for real after all of the glowing reports by end users, then they will never know, and reading a review they don't believe is not going to help them.

I'm not baggin you, I don't do coke, but I do drink it, and I am not paranoid. I am very happy as the C Series is a kick ass killer mic, the new B Series is way impressive, and the VT-1 is coming out and it is awesome.

So I think you took something the wrong way....:D

$500 for a review....i woulda did it for $27.67 and a 12pk of Busch:D

The refreshing thing about this review is the u87 wasnt mentioned and we have learned that horn players like and dont dystroy thes mics. Up to now Ive only used mine for my Seger like vocals and It has Kicked ass for me.

Maybe If Alan got one of these Into Bruce's hands and Bruce posted that he likes it Alot of the sceptics might buy one, Bruces Opinion goes a long way arround here.

I think it's fair to say that companies pay magazine publishers to put a "good" review in for their product. Magazine reviews are very important to a companies' growth.

I respect ProRec.com for dismissing the Marshall 2001 as well, a shitty mic. He was honest and that's what the public wants.

I am not saying the C1 is bad or good (never heard it). Hell once I get the money I'll pick one up. I'm just saying becareful, what you read is not always what it is projected to be.

a little less *destruction* of the English language, and a lil' gramatical upkeep goes a long way too!! :-)

Seriously...how people get a *rep* by a cyber space message board and carry any[or a lot of] credibility is amazing now...isn't it?

And Alan...of course you gotta care about the reviews and what the readers think...or you're not human!! How much they influence you is another direction.
