buzzing snares

i wondering if there was a way to eliminate the buzzing sound most snare drums make when another instrument is being played without comprimising the sound of the drum. for example, when i play any kind of amplified instrument it makes my snare drum "buzz." i found i can almost completely eliminate it by turning the snare off a little bit but then the drum sounds like trash. any help would be appreciated. thanks
 
it's a hard one chrisly - try a bit of gaffa laid across the snare (under snare) :D
 
There really is not a way to get rid of that buzz completely. What is causing that is the bottom head is vibrating due to the sound the other instruments make. If you dampin the sound it is going to dampin the snare sound. If it is that bad you might try a couple things. Try to tighten the snares.You can also try and get some of those gel mufflers and put one or two on the bottom head. Try a little thicker head on the bottom.
Other than that you are pretty much stuck with it, that is just the nature of the instrument, kinda like fret noise on a guitar. When you go to the studio that buzz is usually elimanated because you are in a seperate room or blocked off by some sort of sound proofing so the snare is not exposed to the other sounds nearly as much as a practice space. Not to mention the engineer should mic the top of the snare and the buzz then should not bleed through very much.

thanks. i'll give all that stuff a try. the reason i was asking is because i was recording some stuff live and it came out great except for the buzzing snare. oh well, thanks a lot.
 
Try detuning the bottom head lugs just a touch, that are on each side of the snare gates. Experiment...

Try putting a noise gate on the mic for the snare so that the gate only opens when the drum is hit and stays closed while the other sounds make the snares rattle.You'll have to futz with the threshold on the gate to find the right setting to do this,and if your guitar player turns up his amp you'll have to readjust,but it will clean things up a lot once you get the hang of it.
