I can afford about 600-750 (pushing it) , does anyone have a uggestion for a good first time outboard mic pre.

Im happy with the way my drums and bass sound with the pre's i have in my firepods, but i need a little something in the vocal and guitar department, ive tried lots of mic techniques, lots of room placement and lots of EQ setting both post and pre, and ive come to the conclusion that i might want to invest in a little "oomph" when it comes to guitars and vocals.

so anything out there in my price range thats solid and versitile.

And yes i KNOW that gear wont solve my problems, ive learnd to solve my own problems, but i really believe that something of this sort coudl really help the sounds i desire.

How many channels ya lookin for? The Grace 101 is a very nice pre for the price, its a single channel dealie

Might also want to try posting this in the (proper?) forum, Other Equipment.

one channel is fine, and it doesnt have to be rack mounted, something portable will do. Ill check that one out though, thanks.

all thoes are in your range.

A bit above your range at retail, but maybe an eBay search could find you a used one well within in you range: Apogee Mini-Me.

The main reason I'm throwing that in the mix is that you are getting two channels of fairly decent preamps combined with very good quality A/D conversion. The combo of above-average preamps with above-average conversion would give you two very nice, clean channels of short signal chain for a very reasonable price. More than just a nice preamp box; it gives you a nice pristine signal path (x2) all the way into your digital recorder. Worth the consideration, IMHO.

maybe scope the chameleon labs 7602....another neve 1073 ripoff that's supposed to be pretty nice, and not much more than the price range you've stated

+1 on that one. The eq is a bonous plus nice color and saturation when you push it.
