Buying a new mic this weekend

My parents used to go see Waylon all the time when they were in high school. Waylon was supposed to play here this month. Willie is coming to town next month so hope to see him while I still can.

Hang in there Harvey. Had a few losses on my end too, never easy.

Thanks for all your help and advice.

And I'll continue to post reviews on
Al Schmitt's forum,
or George Massenburg's forum,
on my own forum

Can you tell me the url of those? txs

Oh, and if you post a review somewhere of the 3000b, van you tell me where it will be? Is the only mic that I can find here in Argentina, and I'm considering if it's worth to wait for someone to travel to the States, or just buy that AKG if there's not much difference.

Cheers, Andrés

Al Schmitt's forum is at: http://www.artistpro.com

George Massenburg's forum is at: http://www.musicplayer.com

I host a forum at: http://www.recording.org

As far as the AKG C3000b tests, I'll send my findings to Mr. Zekeman privately (since it's his mic), and he can post them here if he wishes to. I'll be glad to send my findings to you privately via email.

Harvey, when I read Chessrock's post I thought he had his tongue in his cheek but maybe I was mistaken.

I think everyone here really appreciates the help you have given and the amount of effert that it takes to share your knowledge and experience.I learned more reading the "Big Thread on Mics"than I have learned in years of stumbleing around in the dark.I think most people who read it would admit the same.

I am sorry about your losses Harvey. As we get older more people slip away from us and its never easy to lose someone we love.

It's never too late to quit smoking.Three years ago this month I gave up drinking and cigarettes after doing both over thirty years. My lungs ain't totally clean as I still puff weed(hey, nobodies perfect!)but I feel 100% better than I did.Plus I've bought alot of equipment in the past few years that I never could've afforded if I still smoked and drank.

I know you're going to do what you feel you have to do but I hope that you will keep coming here Harvey, myself and many other people would sorely miss both your knowledge and the grace in which you share that knowledge.

No matter what your decision Harvey thank you for the wisdom you've shared and giving me the opportunity to learn.

Randy,

I have absolutely no intention of leaving here at this point, or to stop posting whenever I feel I can be helpful. I just posted in another thread about the use of a windscreen on a mic designed for testing. Hopefully, it was informative to the person that asked the question and I didn't need to comment on the particular product involved (which is one I had recommended originally).

The only change I'm making in my posting habits here is to stop reviewing specific products by brand name/model number. That's all. I'll do those kind of reviews in other forums.

My deepest sympathies go out to you Harvey

Harvey,

I've been playing Waylon Jennings all morning....

from "Good Ole Boys"
I'm a good ole boy
you know my Mama loves me
but she don't understand
they keep a showin' my hands and not my face on TV.

Classic! Ouside of the country world, he was still a huge star, but nobody knew what he looked like. He was a true artist, uncompromising, and when he growled into that microphone you just knew how he felt about whatever it was that he was singing.

Is there anyone in America, even if they don't like C&W, that doesn't know "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys?". He's leaving us now, but he's also leaving us with some of the best music that a cowboy from Texas ever made.

And just in case none of you out there knew this, he was supposed to be on a flight that another great singer from Lubbock Texas was on, but he gave up his seat so the Big Bopper, who was ill at the time, could fly to the next show.

Borrowed time? maybe, but he made the most of it. And he made it better for us too...

Thanks Harvey, for all of the true wisdom that you've shared here. I still read every post that your name is attached to, and even though most of us may never get the pleasure of meeting you in person, you have touched all of our lives. You are the ultimate Internet Mentor/Guru/Jedi Master!

Rest assured most of us here want every bit on knowledge that you are willing to share with us, product reviews and opinions included.

:D

Even though I am very new here, I still appreciate all the wisdom very much. Not only do you post great information here, you post it unbiased. To me thats very important. And to top it all off you have a kick ass studio (or two) that you get try this stuff out in every day. I mean I would trust anyone who does this stuff every day. Especially someone who has for 30+ years! Personally I especially loved that you compared the MXL mics with a TLM103. How many of us can do that? I mean the most expensive mic I can get my hands on is a Sennheiser MD441. And thats still not the quality from what I have heard of the TLM103. I mean if I can get a sound 90% as good as that mic, with a MXLv69G, then I am sure going to do it. Then I'll spend the extra money I saved on a Grace pre.

I mean if people out there want to be lame and tell everyone to stop talking about quality equipment, then let them go somewhere else. I personally want to know about every deal you can think of, and about all the theory behind this stuff. I mean you are giving us more info thatn we could get in recording engineer school, if people would just pay attention.

On a personal note, I bought the ECM8000 on your recommendation and also on the others. I was going to but the MXLv93 (2003) but then when you said that the v63 had the "larger than life" sound that you associate with old german mics and that did it for me. Because that is what I am looking for in a vocal mic, and on other instuments as well. So I ordered a V67G for a nice price too. So I am asking you to please stick around and if you don't, the I guess I'll be visting the other forums a great deal more then.

P.S. You don't smoke in your studio right?? I was asking because I have seen what a few years of tar can do to electrical equipment and it is not pretty. I am sure your don't.

Harvey,

I'm glad you are staying but I think it's unfortunate that you won't be giving opinions of specific mics(on this forum, anyhow). It a shame that you have to feel uncomfertable sharing your views on specific models as this is a mic forum and that's what everyone here (including myself)does.I know sometimes we must put alot of pressure on you by putting so much weight on your words but the fact is you deserve our respect not only for your knowledge but also for your willingness to share that knowledge. That willingness to help out is somewhat of a rare thing in todays world.

Anyways,I am truly sorry for the bad stretch that you are going though.Anything that someone says when you are experiencing hard times always sounds like a Hallmark card. All you can really do is be thankful for the time you shared.

Peace,

Harvey,
I'm sure you know that there are alot more people who read these posts than there are who write them, a silent majority, I'm sure of it. Your posts, insights, hints AND REVIEWS (!) are greatly appreciated. I would respectfully ask that you reconsider posting reviews, they are a very big, honest source of info for all of us. Please don't get thrown by one or two cranks. My father always taught me that at every step of life you need to take care of the guys coming up behind you, you've been doing that honorably and it has a more powerful effect than you may realize (the butterfly flaps his wing and causes a tsunami half way around the world). Whatever you decide to do just know how appreciative we all are for sharing the knowlege you've culled over the years with us, it's invaluable. I also lost a lifelong friend just a few weeks ago and it unraveled me but we bounce back, find perspective, live out our lives trying to string together those moments of joy, good luck.
My dad also taught me never to be a quitter which is how I rationalize still smoking.

Since we bought the Tascam DA-x8 series (which have fans that suck fresh air into the machines), I don't smoke in the control room. I still smoke everywhere else, although Alex (my son) doesn't like smoking anywhere in the big new studio. Dust is an equally big problem here.

As far as giving up smoking anytime soon, I'm probably not going to, nor will I change my diet. After 65 years, my body has learned to extract every bit of nuitrition possible from a Twinkie - if I sent down a salad, I'd get a message from my stomach saying, "what the hell am I supposed to do with this?".

So far, I've outlived most of my peers and I'm not gonna take any chances on screwing up what seems to be working ok for me.

one of my other rationalizations:
I read statistic recently which said that 80% of people who die of lung cancer are not smokers, they're EX-smokers. :)

I just read this forum and rarely post...it's a learning process for me and I'm not very technical......

Thanks a bunch for hindering my already slow curve, chessrock...............

Harvey, I'm sorry for your losses and hope you re-consider reviewing on this board.....trust me, you are appreciated here......................gibs

Harvey,my grandfather lived til his mid nineties and he smoked since he was like ten(I think it was corn silk he stared on).He not only smoked that many years but he smoked Pall Malls (unfiltered)

Different strokes for different folks!

Look, I don't have anything against chessrock and in fact, I think he's a pretty sharp contributor to both this mic forum and many other forums here. His comments did come as a shock to me, and at first I thought he was just kidding, since I thought he had bought some stuff, based on my reviews. Actually I think it was probably just half "tongue-in-cheek".

In any case, I decided that part of chessrock's post was serious and it was the wrong day for him to post that, as far as I was concerned. I'm truly sorry if he really feels that way, but it didn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside about continuing to post reviews here.

As I said, I'll continue to post anything I can to help people that are just starting out, with regards to tips, techniques, theory, mic placements, etc. - I'm just cutting out my reviews here about new (or overlooked) products that I find to be of some interest to me.

it's a pitty, cause this forum has the best search engine and layout compared to those at musicplayer.com, artistpro and recording.org.

Harvey,

I just gotta tell you that whatever I have learned about microphones has been from reading this forum. There are many people whose opinions I respect an you're one of the best here, if not the best, and there are also some people that should stick their tongue in their ass before making a stupid comment that will only screw everybody up. There are many people like me, who don't have your experience and count on your expertise for advice. No, I don't buy everything you suggest, I also got a set of ears, but your opinion definetely counts. Before I purchase my first "real" mics I had been reading this BBS for almost a year and read through your comments, in-depth reviews, and I think that you are a very valuable resource for all of us. Like you said, you're 65 and probably you won't change your mind about reviewing mics in this forum, so guess which forum I'll be hanging out on when I want to learn about mics or some of the other products that you're test driving...Thanks Harvey

And for you Chessrock...Two words

DIE CHESSROCK!

Harvey,

I'm just glad you are going to be continuing your valuable advice - if one had to choose between that and a mic review it'd be the practical advice in a second.

You mentioned Alex - your son - he's pretty sharp in the studio I take it? Following in your footsteps working with some platinum artists anytime?

I'm pretty new but I Love ya man,
Wes

I agree, which is probably why I spend way more time hanging out over here than I do at my own forum. But hopefully, I'll have a little more time now to hang out at my own place.

Yeah, Alex has won several area "Producer Of The Year" awards against some pretty big heavyweight producers and bands. He's working with a lot of new bands that have a shot at gold and platinum. And some bands that we helped get started are now doing gold and platinum with some major labels.

Alex is very sharp in the studio, although there are some metal bands that prefer working with me over Alex. It varies, but Alex is really damn good, and I'm very proud of his achievements.
