I just sold my Motif 6 about a week ago. I miss owning it, but I was using it as a workstation - that is, as my primary sound module, sampler & sequencer - and the polyphony issue was a real bitch for me. 62 + 2 voices. Resampling helped a great deal, but didn't allow me the immediate flexibility I wanted to change what I played and hear the sounds with full effects. Well, can't please all of us...
That being said, I absolutely loved the sounds. So much, that when the Motif rack finally ships, I'll surely own one. No sampler, no sequencer, BUT...
128 voice polyphony!!!!!! (an oversight I feel, especially for something called a "workstation")
4 insert effects vs. 2
newer and reportedly better filters (according to yamaha and some others)
So... I figured a Fatar s-880 or used Studio 90 plus a rack Motif is a better way to go - for me, anyway... Oh yeah, and it's cheaper than a Motif 8. If you can stand to wait a month or two, and don't need the onboard sequencer & ISS - which are both complete MONSTERS to learn, - then you may wanna check that scenario out, too...
The file management on the Motif sucks shit, too. I miss it, and the drama getting adept with it was worth it for the sounds alone, but still...
Of course now I still gotta find a cool way to write and sequence when I'm away from the cradle.
<sigh>
