Dammit, Jim, Shut Up!
Actually, I'm pretty sold on this board. I'm gonna get the 88 weighted key version. I compared the sounds to the Triton and the Fantom and liked them much better overall.

Is there any reason not to go ahead? Speak now or forever...you know! Thanks!

:D :D :D ....still at it Al?
I know your pain man.... its a tuff decision, and a whole lotta dough. I agree about the sounds on the motif.... and im a triton owner. If the onboard sounds are your main motivation for buying either, Youre making the right decision.

.....so go forth young lad........ spend it .....spend it.......:D

Do it!

If I could afford it, I would :)

Can't wait to hear the 'Over 40 blues' remixed with the motif.

DON'T DO IT!!!

you know you can get the same sounds/features on a casio!!!!!

actually, go for it man =) i wish i could have one lol

As a Motif owner myself, I cannot recommend it strongly enough. 'Tis a beautiful thing.

I was afraid nobody would talk me out of it! Yeah, I'm excited to have this board. Just waiting on a certain check to come in and the order goes out! I absolutely love the pianos in the Motif. The Grands are fantastic, the suitcase rhodes is wonderful, and the Wurlitzer is to die for. The organs can be manipulated with the sliders as drawbars--how cool is that? I was knocked out with the strings and drums too. If the rest of the sounds are half as good, I'll be happy.

Guernica--How are you liking your Triton now that you've had it for a bit?

Got a Motif 8 for sale

Anybody interested?
with SKB Hardshell case / Plg150-DX exp. board / 64meg sample RAM / Glyph SCSI-CD ROM drive.
$1900

I just sold my Motif 6 about a week ago. I miss owning it, but I was using it as a workstation - that is, as my primary sound module, sampler & sequencer - and the polyphony issue was a real bitch for me. 62 + 2 voices. Resampling helped a great deal, but didn't allow me the immediate flexibility I wanted to change what I played and hear the sounds with full effects. Well, can't please all of us...

That being said, I absolutely loved the sounds. So much, that when the Motif rack finally ships, I'll surely own one. No sampler, no sequencer, BUT...

128 voice polyphony!!!!!! (an oversight I feel, especially for something called a "workstation")
4 insert effects vs. 2
newer and reportedly better filters (according to yamaha and some others)

So... I figured a Fatar s-880 or used Studio 90 plus a rack Motif is a better way to go - for me, anyway... Oh yeah, and it's cheaper than a Motif 8. If you can stand to wait a month or two, and don't need the onboard sequencer & ISS - which are both complete MONSTERS to learn, - then you may wanna check that scenario out, too...

The file management on the Motif sucks shit, too. I miss it, and the drama getting adept with it was worth it for the sounds alone, but still...

Of course now I still gotta find a cool way to write and sequence when I'm away from the cradle.

<sigh>

Mo Rack has no Flash Card !!

Everything else I digged except this.............

Midi bulk dump for importing user sounds is WEAK !!!!!!!

I have Custom Kits (At least 15 of them with Sample Ram Drums)

Save on the Flash Card and Presto new music... On the Mo Rack...I dont think so... Makes you want to have both.. Or at least a new MO with 128.

How good are the Motif racks? Are you referring to the $999 1U boxes? I'm thinking about getting one in the distant future. Right now I use a Yamaha P80 which i bought exclusively for piano practice in my college apartment. How well would it work with the Motif rack?

Hey Al,
I love it man. As i mentioned, my decision was made when i actually started fumbling w/ the utilities and stuff (seq., etc.) I just found the triton more intuitive and user friendly. And, unlike some other folks here, I love the touch screen. I do remember a/b'ing the two though, and thinking to myself...damn, i wish it had "those" sounds though (check out the flute sound that every one is raving about.....simply amazing). I hope to get a motif rack when i completely burn myself out on the triton sounds..... ....but thats gonna be a while. I got the Triton studio. It comes w/ the piano upgrade..... so the piano sounds are pretty clean as well. I think you mentioned that you record on Dig. Perfomer.... ...so im assuming that you wont be using the sequencer that much anyway. If i recorded the same way, I may have chosen differently.

oh buy the triton! :)

ahhhh... just kidding

i own the triton studio and especially like the easy navigation with the touch screen...

get out there and try 'em out and see what you like better :) ... each one has its advantages..

i wouldnt listen to anybody but yourself!

im sure youll make the right decision... good luck! :)

I'm surprised no one even mentions the XV-88. Isn't it thought of very well??

Yo esun127...

"How good are the Motif racks?"

As rumor has it, they're awesome. Sounds are fantastic, if you're into synth programming, a couple of the cards are quite interesting. Drum kits are definately not shabby. I chose not to pre-order one since i'm not rich enough to let my money float in nowhere land until the thing actually ships...

"Are you referring to the $999 1U boxes?"

Yessir.

"I'm thinking about getting one in the distant future. Right now I use a Yamaha P80 which i bought exclusively for piano practice in my college apartment. How well would it work with the Motif rack?"

I think it'd be a great combo. I don't think many of the sounds (if any) are redundant, you'd know better than I. If the P80 sounds are different than the S-90, then you've got your answer...

Bstage made a really good point about the rack's midi bulk dump. Kind of a pain... I was really close to keeping my Mo' 6 and buying a mo' rack, too. Found a good deal on another TG so I went that route along with an 88 key controller. I'm hoping to order the Mo' rack sometime this month - we'll see if it drops as promised.

Damn do I miss mine...

Just read somewhere about a particular musician that did an entire project on an old Korg analogue synth. The relevance hereto is in this statement: IT IS BETTER TO HAVE ONE INSTRUMENT AND KNOW IT COMPLETELY THAN TO HAVE 20 INSTRUMENTS AND NOT KNOW THEM THAT WELL.

Therefore, you may ask yourslef, have you fully exploited the keyboards you have or are you just lustin after the latest collection of bells and whistles, lights and switches. Will this improve you mucisal expression or are you simply falling victim to the never-enough-gadgets-syndrome?

Think about it!

Good point.

The only gear lust I fall victim to is for the goodies in the nightstand drawer, and since my fiancee share my, uh, passion, she never bitches about the money I spend...

<ah, to be an "Artiste...>

It shipped but looks like preorders in the places I checked weren't yet filled. Maybe next week...

I have the yamaha ex5, which the motif is predesor too. All I can say is yamaha big ax's sound pretty damn good. They have extreme effects capabilities also. If you can't make the sound you want on this board.... well then you might want to buy the original instrument because they are doing the best then can... which is pretty darn good. My friend has the motif 8, it is similar to the ex5 in structure and sound quality etc. The motif extends in having a super fast sample load time, 220,000 sequencer events.... the ex5 has a extremly slow sample load time, and only 40,000 sequencer events.

Other than that... if you want a very similar synth for 1/2 the price, get a used ex5 120 note polynifiny also man, or the ex7 which is 64. Or get the ex5r the rack version of the ex5.

You can get a used ex5 for 600 bucks man. If you want just a sound module.... the ex5 has more actually more sonic cabalities then the motif, as the motif only has AWM sounds and the ex5 has AWM, VL, FDSP, AN, etc.
