I'm using CEP, and I've been having some difficulty with the quality of the recordings when I mix/burn them down to a CD. I've recorded just some clips of guitars/amps, and they sound fine ( objectively :) ) in their uploaded form on SoundClick, but when I burn them to a CD, they sound a bit fizzy or something. The biggest offenders are some bass tracks that sound Killer on my monitors, but turn to flubb when I burn them down(???) Everything sounds great on my monitors (Wharfedale 8.2A's) and when I download the clips from soundclick at work and playthem on my cheap PC speakers they sound good as well.

I notice there are two settings when I record, the bit rate which I usually do at 16 since at 32 I can't seem to be able to play them back with windows media player or any of the otheres. The other setting is ...umm.. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it can be set at 44.1 or like 48, but if I go any higher, it won't play back either (when saved in a wav. file) Isn't 44 a "standard" for CD's, do I need to reduce them back to 44 instead of like 48 ----> could this be the problem?

Here's a link to the clips I've recorded thus far, any suggestions on impovements would be greatly appreciated!

The 16 bit 32 bit and sampling rates (44.1kHz, 48kHz, 96kHz) thing boils down to your soundcard specs. This dictates what bit depth you can actually record at and also what sampling rate. The 44.1kHz sampling rate is what CDs are and also 16 bit. What kind of soundcard do you have?

Thanks for the fast reply!!!

I'm running a Delta 1010 system by M Audio.

I'm kind of hazey on the whole recording process due to the fact I am VERY unfamiliar with the Cool Edit Pro, and PC recording as a whole.......You'd think as long as I've been around here I'd have learned a thing or two huh?

What Bit/Sampling rate should I be initially recording at? (Higher #'s = Better Quality??)

When I mix them down or save them in a .wav format, the bit/sampling rate should be 16/44.1??

Since I think I've been saving mine in .wav format at like 46 or 48 instead of 44.1, ( I'm pretty sure it's really around 46, I don't think it would play back in MusicMatch beyond 46. ---> I use music match for my wav to MP3 conversion) Could this be a possible cause for the buzzy/fizzyness of the recordings when they are transferred to CD?

Thanks again!!!

Rick

I'd record at 24 bits, 44.1kHz for multitrack purposes and even mix down at that resolution. When you have your final stereo wav at 24/44.1, dither it down to 16/44.1 to make a CD. The higher bit depth and dithering that down is much more meaningful than the higher sampling rate and doing a sample rate conversion.

Ok, 16/44.1 when converting into a .wav file for CD Burning - Thanks!!

It seems my only options for multitrack are like 8, 16, and 32 bit. I don't recall seeing a 24 bit selection on the CEP window ( )

Could I just do it in 32 bit??? (then change it to 16 when putting it in a .wav format?

Thanks,
Rick
