Although reasonably competent in many areas of computer work over 20 plus years, my know how with regard to burning CDs is NIL as the following cries for help will be obvious to those of you who are ‘seasoned campaigners’.

I believe I am falling into a possible trap of thinking the work is similar to copying and pasting. Also viewing the disk as I do my floppy disk and zip disk. Whereas I hope you are all going to say – start to think differently when it comes to learning this new technology.

My problems!! Sorry about the long-winded detail, but I know of no other way to let you know where I have been in my first 36 hours. So here goes.

1. I use Windows 98SE operating system. Have 512MB RAM and hard disk of 57GB. The CD Rewriter is the Plextor Plexwriter 24/10/40A. The burning software came with the rewriter and is Nero version 5.5.3.5.

2. I tried to start in the most simple way I thought. The Plextor came with a complimentary disk CD-RW 74 minutes 650 MB. So I used this. I decided to write 1 AVI file to the CD-ROM (ISO). This worked OK. It was at this point I decided to use Explorer and using the right mouse button I examined the Properties to see Total capacity and bytes available. Here I was confronted with something surprising I thought. It showed up as Used 2MB and Free Space as ZERO BYTES! Why would this not show the balance of the 650MB CD-RW disk please? The usual properties circle image was coloured blue throughout - as all used up. Puzzled?? Type shown as CD-ROM disk and the File System as CDFS. It was this that made me write earlier have I got to start thinking differently from before.

3. Next I tried to delete the file using Explorer and this was not possible. I received a message to the effect that the file is “read-only”, together with the following: ERROR DELETING FILE. Cannot delete. Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use. I had made sure not to finalize the disk in any way to prevent what I imagine would lead to such a write-protection. The disk patently was not full, the file was not being used other than me trying to delete it, and all programs were closed.

4. After the foregoing, I tried to create a MULTISESSION CD following Nero 5 instructions to the letter which I had printed out for clarity. Now before I started I erased the disk and checked using CD-Info the true availability capacity. Now here it was different it showed 651MB. Nevertheless I was a little confused by the other reference above it, because in the Total capacity it showed 0MB. I had thought this figure should also be 651MB. Perhaps I am completely missing the point in thinking that all references in this CD- burning business would be similar to those of using a Floppy Disk or a Zip disk. Perhaps someone could “cut to the chase” on this one for me. Thanks in advance.

5. My Multisession efforts used ISO Level 2 – Mode 1 ISO9660 – Start Multisession disk. All OK. Continued Multisession disk using default settings with multisession. I added 1 file to first attempt and this too was OK.

6. Now this is where I really start to lose the plot! Having read online help it states that something known as “the Nero Multimounter” is automatically installed with the installation of Nero! I take that to be so, as I would not know how to check. But let’s assume for the moment that it was. They use a question often sent to them which is: “Although I created a Multisession disk I can only see the last session. Why?” They (aHead) go on to explain that would probably be the case and that in Windows 3.1x you would only see the first session. But using the Nero Multimounter we can switch to any other session on our Multisession CD. I used their instructions as set out and when attempting to select my first session I got the message. “ The volume could not be mounted” Totally confused!! The ticked last selection is the only one I could access. Whether or not I need the earlier ones at this stage of my learning I have no idea. I just followed the instructions blindly.

7. If I wanted to remove earlier sessions one by one from the disk to increase available space, how would I do this please?

8. Basically I get the feeling that once information is on a CD-RW (and maybe a CD-R also) it cannot be removed file by file from a CD-RW like a Zip Disk. Only removed in its entirety by disk erasing. Is this so please?

As you can see, I soon realised that I was going nowhere and getting there fast – that is why I come to you to point me at least in the right direction. It is no good me charging down the road playing with the software I feel, if in fact I am heading in the wrong direction from the outset.

At least I learned early that there is a LOT to learn in this subject.

Many thanks to you all.
David

I hate to ask the obvious--but are you sure that you are using a CDRW as opposed to a CDR disk? This could explain why you are not able to erase any info on the disk. As for there being 0 bytes available, you may have closed your session when writing that original file (i'm talking CDR not CDRW). Once you close a session, I think your burning software will write info onto the disk that does not allow you to write adiitional info at a later date. This is how it is with my HP & adaptec software. It seems that the step you are taking are correct-- you may want to buy another CDRW & try again.

Thanks nattn for your response.

Yes this is definitely a CD-RW. The details written on the disk are PLEXTOR CD-RW 74Min/650MB and then 4x 10x compact disc ReWritable High Speed.

With regard to closing the session. Nero I think allows this providing I choose "Continue with Multisession" which I did.

However if I choose Finalize then it does what you alluded to in your reply and prevents any additional material going on the disc.

Real mystery isn't it?
Thanks.

Well I've got nothing for you now. Sorry I couldn't be more help. I'd email those folks at Nero. they should be able to help.

Good luck with your prob

Thanks natton.

I emailed Nero folks on 29th. Haven't heard anything back from them yet.

Will let you know how I get on OR DON'T!!

yea, you have the CDR basics wrong

with a CDRW disk, you can't just drag and drop in explorer. Explorer doesn't know what to do with a file when you try to delete it off of a CDRW. You have to back into Nero and erase the disk, then rewrite to it. its a timely process compared to drag and drop. But thats how it works.

Thanks kristian, fully understood.

I suppose only that Packet CD formatting program will enable us to use a CD very much like a hard disk or floppy disk? However, I imagine then you could not use it as a normal CD-RW in Nero or any other burning software, without changing it somehow and I would not have a clue how to achieve this situation anyway!

As a follow up, I promised to let you know how I got on with contacting Nero support.

They emailed me and suggested I upgrade to Nero 5.5.5.1 from their website in respect of the issue with the Multisession Mounter. I did as they suggested and ‘yes’ that made the difference, I am now able to select any Session in the manner they had indicated earlier in their online help.

Ironically this leads me to ask you all, “what is the point of being able to do this?”. I found out that when returning to the Nero software it just enabled you to examine that Session, which I suppose is useful, though because I am only just starting out I can’t see in what manner being able to do so, is helpful.

No matter how I examined various Tracks and Sessions there appeared to be no way to be able to Delete a session or files within a Track. In essence I feel that you either delete the entire CD or carry on with adding sessions, and when you get things the way you want them, copy everything to a hard disk and then prepare a complete CD from there.

Your kind help on the above would be very much appreciated. Already you have been a great assistance to me and I thank you for it.

more ?s

You are correct, you either A) add sessions or B) erase the entire disk. There is no file system on a CD. Just files burned one after the other with a TOC telling the viewer where a file is. without the TOC its just a piece of plastic with holes burnt in :)

Adaptec/Roxio's EZ CD Creator has a program called Direct CD that allows you to read/write to a CD-RW just as if it were a hard drive.

You launch the program and it runs in the background and then you can use Windows Explorer to move, copy, or delete files. You can also create directories, etc. IOW, anything that you can normally do in Explorer on a hard drive (or floppy).

I've never used Nero, so don't know if it has something equivalent, but it sounds like Direct CD is what you are looking for.

dachay2tnr, I was going to share the same info with ukdave.
It sounds like ukdave needs to pick up Adaptec/Roxio EZ CD Creator/Direct CD.
That should be the answer to his woes. :)

Thanks to you both. I will look out for Adaptec/Roxio's EZ CD Creator.

From 36 hours experience to "getting there" - thanks to the guys who bother to help beginners at this Forum.

Confidence growing to start learning about the subject now - I will keep in touch from time to time.

Good Luck to you all.

if you wanna move and add/delete files using the explorer you have to use an additional program, which does all that burning stuff. explorer cannot burn a cd. ahead has also such a program. it's called inCD and it should be included in your nero-package, cause i have it but i never use it.
