...and get on there and get a GREAT mic instead of worrying with what mediocre mic you are worrying with this week.
There are a bunch of 441's going soon and at least one 541 BlackFire going in a couple days. THere is even a buy it now for $300 if you dont want to chance not getting one. I think they can be scored for under $250 if you try. Thats cheaper than a NEW MD-421! Nuff said.
Best buy on the planet. Quit screwing around and get your asses over there.
Let me know if you win one.
Peace!

shhhh!

you are going to drive up the price!

supply and demand, supply and demand.

by the way i second the HUGE 441 endorsement.

I just search under "Sennheiser microphone" and make sure you check the little checkbox for searching heading and content...
Scroll through, you'll find them....

Good luck!

I'm not in this league, by a long shot. But... I did just my first SM57 at a pretty good new price from eBay.

thanks for the "heads-up". They are wonderful mics. But it does seem you see them quite a bit on Ebay, so I would say the supply isn't going to be exhausted.

Aren't there also currently a shitload of the MD421's on there now too...the model you are looking for?

I could take or leave the 421's though... I'd just assume have a pair of 57's, I guess... unless it's one of those groovy white ones.

excuse my ignorance :D, but what would you expect these mics to go for normally, I hear sooo much about both the 441 and 421 and i really want one of the two. Maybe if I feel like im getting that great of a deal I'll just go or it

I got an 441 off Ebay for $210 in brand new condition some months ago. It sure is a great mic, but I was wondering if a LDC would give me "better" results for female vocals. I guess the LDCs in the <$300 range (like a SP C1 or MXL 69 ME) would not be a dramatic improvement, if at all. Shall I wait until I get the funds for a mic in the TLM 103 and up league??

They are over $700 new, look at Sweetwaters site. I can't for the life of me figure out why they don't fetch $500 used, as that would be a good price. The fact that they don't is very good news for us all, though... easily the better mic in many situations. I think part of the reason there are so many, though, is that it is a mic with some age, and at one point it was a very very popular microphone and that means eventually a lot of them will hit the used market. They are in a fair abundance because of that, and in many cases they are fairly old, so I guess people arent asking that much for them. Good news for you.
Very good microphone. I wish every other mic was fetching 1/3 of its new price on ebay, I guess this is just one of those weird unexplainable things. No one has a bad word to say about this mic, other than it takes a lot of gain to get a hot signal.
Getcha one.

Expensive Rane pro audio gear sells for much less than 66% of new-discount price on eBay.

On the flip side, QSC power amps always sell at a premium, far higher than 66%. QSC can be had new for little more than the typical eBay price. Go figure.

Tubedude- Can you give us some examples where you find the MD441 to be extremely useful? Certain situations/ instruments, etc. Maybe describe the overall tone of the mic.

I'm just curious WHY you think it's a good mic. I'm sure it is, but I'd like to know more than I can get it used.

Anybody else out there with comments?

(BTW- I will probably forward this information to the MIC FAQ. So if you want to get quoted, now's your chance.)

I think the reason why there are so many on the market is due to the fact that they were extensively used in the 70-90s for field recording by reporters in the tv business -- especially in Germany. Every tv reporter had one. Just a week ago I saw Carson Daily from the MTV series TRL making interviews with an 441, too. Ahhh, and it looks soooo good/weird, too!

Well . . . they're great mics.

But there also happen to be a lot of great dynamics that can be had for the same money or less. The Beyers come to mind (m88, m69) . . . also the SM7. You also see some Electrovoice RE16's pop up from time to time.

Particularly on the used market, some of these guys can be had for less than $100. Almost makes the md441 look "pricey." :D :D

Wow, i really can't pass this up now!

is the 441 brighter then the SM7?

Yea, I'd say it's a slightly brighter mic, for the most part.

Perhaps crisper and more "articulate" would be a better way of putting it. The difference, I would say, is more in their textures than in their frequency curves. The sm7 I would characterise as a tad smoother and silkier in texture, but less articulate.

OK, tubedude, we get it. You love the 441. You want us all to have one. I think we can figure out Ebay on our own, if we want one.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I'm kind of annoyed at your tone in your fortnightly "Buy the 441 or you're stupid" threads. To me, you're coming off like a nagging mother. It's one thing to recommend a mic, quite another to tell us to "Quit screwing around and get your asses over there." It gets a little tired after the third or fourth time.

I'm not saying that you're wrong, just that, if I am representative, you might be annoying some people.

The Sennheisers are good mics (441 and 421). In fact, the 421 sounds best for a lot of things on my voice. BUT, you would get a lot of mileage with something like an SP C1. It's a far different sound to a dynamic and is a very good vocal mic for some voices. I've found it useful for many female vocals. I have both mics that you mention and they are very good mics. They do things very different from a dynamic, even a quasi-dynamic like the 441. By that, I don't mean that the 441 is somehow not a true dynamic. All that I mean is that the 441 has a high end response and a "sound" similar to some condensers.

Plus, I've never found anything all that special about the TLM 103. Not a bad mic, but it's just a few hundred less than some great offerings by Soundelux and Lawson that it just doesn't make much sense to me.
