I record rap, and believe me, you can do alot with 10 g's. If you wanna get a pro tools setup, then your gonna have to get the le version.
Heres a list of eveything I would get:
Digi 002 W/t pro tools
mic pre: Avalon Vt-737
mic: Rode NTk
Beat making software: Reason
sampler: roland Mv-8000
monitors: Krk v8
keyboard: korg triton
You'll need a pretty good computer too. AMD64 3400+ processors seem to be the best bang for buck right now.
You'll need 1gig RAM,
a couple fast (7200RPM, 8ms seek time, 8MB cache) and quiet harddrives, I recommend seagates.
You'll probably want to invest in some stuff that's designed for silence for the computer, ie. case, case fans, CPU cooler, Power supply.
Plan on spending about a grand on the computer alone if you build. up to double if you buy a turnkey DAW computer. READ AND RE-READ the digidesign site about compatibility. There's some really random stuff in there that could cause problems if you aren't careful.
Please let me know if anything is unclear.
Other suggestions:
Get the 002R and separate Control Surface (ie. Motor Mix), there are many units that cover the differences between 002 and 002R, for much less than the price difference between the two.
Couple of flatscreen monitors (or one big one)
Quality cables
More mics for versatility
You'll probably want to spend another grand just on acoustic treatment. Read some of the posts around here on exactly what.
